If you haven’t been keeping up, Depp, 58, is suing Heard, 35, for $50 million after she penned a 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post in which she categorized herself as a survivor of domestic abuse. Although the Aquaman actress never explicitly mentioned Depp by name, he maintains that the opinion piece derailed his acting career and sullied his reputation.

Heard, who met the actor while making their 2011 movie The Rum Diary, filed for divorce from Depp in 2016, accusing him of abuse, which he denied. “I was advised by my attorneys not to fight it,” he said explaining his decision not contest her allegations at the time. He went a step further accusing her of violently attacking him.

Many of the lurid details have already been aired during a British trial in which Depp sued the U.K. Sun tabloid for printing a headline that called him a “wife beater.” A London High Court judge ruled that the Pirates of the Caribbean star had repeatedly assaulted Heard during their marriage.

Depp called Heard’s allegations an “elaborate hoax” that cost him “everything.” A sixth Pirates movie was scrapped, and Depp was dumped from the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Unbowed by a U.K. court’s decision, Depp is pursuing a lawsuit against Heard in Fairfax, Va., to “clear his name.”

“I would be a real simpleton to not think that there was an effect on my career based on Ms. Heard’s words, whether they mentioned my name or not,” he said.

Heard is countersuing, claiming Depp defamed her by deeming her allegations of abuse as a “hoax.” Her attorneys further argue that it is his own pattern of poor behaviour which led to his stalled career.

The trial is expected to last over a month, with Heard and other big names like Elon Musk, James Franco and Paul Bettany all still expected to testify.

But before we get to them, we should take a look back at the biggest bombshells from Depp’s testimony this week.

REVENGE POOP

Depp alleged that Heard or one of her pals defecated in their bed after an argument erupted over his tardiness for her 30th birthday party. The actor left their condo in downtown Los Angeles for another home in the Hollywood Hills.

The next day, Depp was shown a pic sent by his housekeeper. “It was a photograph of our bed,” Depp testified. “And on my side of the bed was human fecal matter.”

He continued, “My initial response to that was … I laughed … It was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh.”

Later on, when speaking about the incident, Heard “tried to blame it on the dogs,” Depp added.

“They’re teacup Yorkies. They weigh about 4 pounds each. The photograph that I saw — I lived with those dogs for many years. It was not the dogs.”

‘ROTTING CORPSE’

Depp was also forced to recite text messages he sent a friend and neighbour Isaac Baruch and Bettany. “I’ll just say that I’m not proud of any of the language that I used,” he said.

As he read aloud, the courtroom heard him refer to his wife as a “whore that I donated my j— to for awhile.” Other texts included messages about drowning and burning Heard and one in which he said, “I will f— her burnt corpse to make sure she is dead … Hopefully that c—‘s rotting corpse is decomposing in the f—ing trunk of a Honda Civic!!”

Depp blamed his dark sense of humour for the messages saying that he was “embarrassed” by their content.

‘ISN’T HAPPY HOUR ANYTIME?’

Jurors saw footage Heard secretly shot as he raged in a kitchen. “Motherf—er! Motherf—er!” Depp was heard screaming. “You wanna see crazy? I’ll give you f—ing crazy,” he continued before realizing he was being filmed.

The Oscar nominee also addressed his past substance abuse during his testimony. “I’d fallen off the wagon when I was doing Lone Ranger,” adding that there was always “a glass of whiskey waiting for me.”

When Heard’s lawyer Benjamin Rottenborn asked Depp about drinking in the morning, the actor managed to get some laughs when he replied: “Isn’t happy hour anytime?”

Elsewhere, Depp spoke about doing drugs with Bettany — with whom he starred in the movies The Tourist, Transcendence and Mortdecai — and shock rocker Marilyn Manson, who has been accused of sexual assault and abuse.

“I once gave Marilyn Manson a pill so that he would stop talking so much,” Depp said dryly.

Jurors were also shown photos of cocaine and alcohol and another that captured Depp passed out with ice cream melting on his lap.

He blamed the embarrassing image on a long workday shooting Black Mass and some opioids he had taken.

“If you’ll notice, my right hand is in my pocket, so I wasn’t participating in the festival of ice cream,” Depp said. “I was holding her ice cream because she knew what was going to happen — that I would fall asleep and it would drop and that was a wonderful picture to take.”
