Former champion Judd Trump is out of the World Snooker Championship in the first round after losing 10-6 to Anthony McGill at the Crucible on Wednesday.
Trump was favourite for the contest, but McGill was clearly a qualifier that the seeded players wanted to avoid, having been to a semi and two quarter-finals at the Crucible before.
Despite a strong start from Trump, as he took the opening two frames and led 3-2, McGill took control by the end of Tuesday’s first session and never relinquished it.
The Scot was 6-3 ahead heading into Wednesday afternoon, with Trump again starting the session well by winning the first two frames, but McGill regained command as the Englishman began to wilt.
It was only in flashes that Trump managed to show his brilliant best and started struggling over the closing stages, spurning some good opportunities.
‘I had plenty of chances, missed a lot of easy balls, Anthony scored a lot heavier, but I had all the chances I needed,’ Trump told the BBC.
‘Anthony was always going to be tough, but I had all the chances I needed, only myself to blame.’
On his season he added: ‘It’s been a struggle, there’s been a lot more easy balls missed this season than I have done for a long time. Maybe the concentration isn’t quite there.’
McGill goes on to face Jack Lisowski in the second round over three sessions, beginning on Saturday, as he shows again that he is a fearsome opponent at the Crucible.
The Glaswegian has beaten the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy in the past in Sheffield and adds Trump to his list of scalps.
‘It’s incredible, it’s right up there,’ McGill said of the win. ‘He’s obviously a world champion, so to beat guys like that, it’s unbelievable. Tremendous couple of days for me.’
Stephen Hendry was critical of Trump’s ability to play under pressure after the match, saying on the BBC: ‘I just don’t think he’s the same player when there’s any pressure on. He looks vulnerable on the pressure shots, the clutch shots.’
