The Manchester United and Arsenal legends were discussing their thoughts on management with Gary Neville, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher on Sky Bet’s Stick to Football and Keane revealed that he is still very interested in another crack at management.

The 52-year-old had spells in charge of Sunderland and Ipswich, brilliantly securing promotion for the Black Cats from the Championship in his first season in charge before leaving the following year.

His stint at Ipswich was not so successful, winning just 28 of his 81 games in charge, but 12 years after leaving the Tractor Boys, the Irishman is keen to return to management.

‘I’d like to go back in, yeah,’ Keane said on Stick to Football. Asked why, he said: ‘I think it’s just the challenge of getting back in.

‘I’ve been out of management for a number of years now, but I’m still agitated every Saturday about not having a team and I’ve not managed for 10-11 years, so it never goes away.

‘But it’s about what opportunity you’re going to get. Sunderland wasn’t easy, Ipswich was a tough challenge. It depends on the club, the timing, the contract.

‘Sometimes you think you’d like the challenge, you speak to the club, look at the contract, have a bit of self worth, do you think you want to go in and face those challenges?’

Wright has never taken charge of a club, but certainly considered it as he coached MK Dons for a season in 2012-13, working with manager Karl Robinson.

The Arsenal icon says it wasn’t for him, though, and that experience in League One put him off management forever.

‘I did a year at MK Dons because I wanted to see if I had that feeling for boots on the grass…I didn’t,’ Wright said. ‘I did it for a year and watching the guys train and then watching them on a Saturday play totally different to what they were told to do…

‘I didn’t know what to say! I couldn’t believe I was watching the same players playing at the levels they were playing there [in training], and now they can’t even string three passes together.

‘In that moment I realised that it was not the place for me. I wasn’t enjoying doing it. I didn’t have the mentality to be able to deal with the press, the pressures that come with the manager and emotionally I’d be all over the place.’

The former England striker also feels that successful managers now must be totally obsessed with their job, which is not something he feels he could do.

‘Arsene Wenger was obsessive about football,’ he said. ‘You look at Pep [Guardiola], he’s the same, Mikel [Arteta] is the same, [Jurgen] Klopp.

‘There’s a different energy to the managers now to their obsession to get it right and what they want to do and I’m nowhere near that place. Nowhere near that place.’
