The gamble did not pay off for the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix went all in at the trade deadline, sending key pieces and several draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets for Kevin Durant.
In the end, Durant and the Suns ended up losing to the Denver Nuggets in six games in the Western Conference semifinals. Phoenix dealt with significant injuries in the series and it was ultimately their lack of depth that led to their exit from the playoffs.
After Thursday’s blowout loss, Durant summarized the Suns’ unceremonious exit from the postseason in one simple word.
“Embarrassing,” said the two-time NBA Finals MVP.
The Suns suffered the same fate in the NBA Playoffs for the second season in a row, losing by double-digits in an elimination game on their home floor. Last year, it was in Game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks, and this year it was Game 6 against the Denver Nuggets.
Despite the loss – and his frustration – Durant was able to keep a positive mindset on the future of the team.
“We just got to be better next year,” he said. “It’s hard right now to see what the future will hold for our team, but we got a good foundation, good infrastructure. We can build on and move on from this and learn from it and get better from it.”
