KSI ‘gutted’ over ‘tarnished’ Joe Fournier win as he makes elbow admission

KSI has admitted that he is ‘gutted’ that his win over Joe Fournier has been ‘tarnished’ by an apparent use of an elbow in his match-winning punch. The YouTuber has conceded that he did connect with his forearm in an unintentional manner in an emotional apology to fans.

KSI knocked out Fournier in front of a watching potential opponent in Tommy Fury at Wembley Arena on Saturday. However, the manner of the win was the subject of controversy as the 29-year-old appeared to catch his opponent with an elbow.

Fournier has suggested he will be filing a formal complaint over the manner of the win, hoping the result will be overturned into a disqualification win for himself. He has the support of Jake Paul too, who has also suggested it should have been ‘ruled a no contest or disqualification’.

Now, KSI has reacted to the incident, apologising to fans who may feel disappointed for the way the fight went down and admitting that he did unintentionally catch Fournier with his forearm.

In a statement released via his Twitter page, KSI said: “I worked very hard for this fight and had an intense and grueling camp. There’s no better feeling than being in that ring and having my hand raised in front of my loyal and amazing fans who I appreciate so much.

“Unfortunately the victory which was inevitable no matter what, is tarnished and I hate that. It sucks!

“After landing my overhand he was pretty much out on his feet and I went for a short right hook as Joe clinched me and fell into me. I landed that hook and my glove made contact but appears to have been followed by unintentional contact with my forearm.

“I’m gutted that it’s not as clean a win as I wanted and it feels like it diminishes my hard work with my trainers. Either way I hope you enjoyed the show and appreciate the support. Sorry to all the fans disappointed with it. No one is more so than me.”

KSI’s statement is unlikely to appease Fournier who appears hell-bent on getting the decision overturned.

“I knew fighting the promoter there would be every angle in his [favour] but to call this a KO instead of a disqualification after an intentional elbow is disgusting!” Fournier said on his Instagram story.

“We will be appealing this decision Monday and I hope both [KSI and Misfits Boxing, and Professional Boxing Association] do the right thing and show their integrity to the sport of boxing!”

It remains to be seen whether or not anything will come from his appeal but the controversy from the fight shows no signs of disappearing.
