Lizzo Paid Homage to Tina Turner in Voluminous Red Curls

Lizzo is paying homage to the one and only Tina Turner as only she can — with music and some extremely Turner-worthy auburn curls.

Lizzo hit the stage on May 24 in Phoenix, Arizona in a glittering emerald cutout gown and luscious red ringlets with equally curly bangs similar to the shag style most often associated with Turner, particularly during the ’90s. She was ready to pay tribute to the star, who died on May 24 at the age of 83 and was clearly a major inspiration for Lizzo. “Today we lost an icon,” the visibly emotional star said to her cheering audience, reflecting on the impact Turner had on her life and career. “I don’t want to [cry] right now because I just want to celebrate … As a Black girl in a rock band, I wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.” She then launched in to a rousing rendition of “Proud Mary,” one of Turner’s signature songs.

The musician’s curls perfectly suited the heartfelt homage and shouted out Turner’s iconic look without feeling costumey. They flowed gently in the breeze as she spoke of her love and admiration for Turner and kicked into action when she ripped off the skirt of her gown to reveal an equally sparkly bodysuit. (Turner, too, often used her hair as an accessory while dancing, notably during performances of “Proud Mary.”) Lizzo paired her ringlets with a flush of warm peachy-rose blush and a gorgeous deep pink lip.
