ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith kicked off Thursday’s edition of “First Take” by making fun of Lakers star Anthony Davis for leaving Game 5 against the Warriors with a head injury.
Davis had to be carted to the Lakers’ training room in a wheelchair after taking an elbow to the head from Kevon Looney. The concern in Los Angeles is that he may have suffered a concussion.
Even though concussions are no laughing matter, Smith thought it was appropriate to mock Davis on national television.
“I’ll be damned if I wasn’t laughing,” Smith said. “Concussion? I thought the NFL season was over.”
That’s not all Smith had to say about Davis’ injury.
“A wheelchair, really? That’s where we are? … It’s the playoffs, man. Was he running over the middle and got hit by Ronnie Lott or something? Did I miss something?”
Unsurprisingly, countless media members and sports fans called out Smith for his behavior.
Shameful that in 2023 media members are making light of head injuries. https://t.co/mjStKq6jLW

“The discourse on this is really disturbing. You would think, given some of the public NFL horror stories of the last 15 years of so, we might have educated ourselves even marginally about the stakes of a serious blow to the head. They try to pull it back at the end but….. wow,” Dave Zirin tweeted.

“I mean look who is speaking. Are we surprised SAS sucks? All he is good for is memes at this point. Nuanced sports talk? Nah fam,” another fan wrote.

We understand that part of Smith’s job is to put on a show. That’s why half the time he’s on “First Take” he’s firing off opinions that are illogical.
Smith isn’t the only guilty party in this situation. Jay Williams also laughed at Davis’ misfortune.
Molly Qerim and Brian Windhorst, on the other hand, remained professional throughout this ridiculous segment.
