Looking For Things to Do? Here’s Where to Go in August (and What to Wear)

0

Not long ago, you might have found yourself all dressed up with nowhere to go. Or, more likely, you weren’t dressed up at all. But that was then, and this is now. August offers lots to do: This weekend in Manhattan, Chanel has made possible a ballet performance featuring some of the city’s most prestigious dance companies as part of the BAAND Together festival; a Gaetano Pesce exhibition and outdoor installation in Aspen make the city even more enjoyable in the summertime; and, of course, we’d be remiss not to mention the upcoming US Open tennis tournament. More on all of these—plus outfit suggestions!—in August’s edition of What to Wear, Where.

August 9-13

For the second year, five of New York’s most prestigious ballet companies have joined forces for a series of performances dubbed BAAND Together. An acronym for all the companies involved, BAAND featured dancers from Ballet Hispánico, Alvin Ailey American Dancer Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and the Dance Theatre of Harlem, who will perform for free as part of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City program. It’s all made possible by Chanel, a fashion house whose patronage of the ballet began with none other than Mrs. Gabrielle Chanel. Dress for the occasion in something inspired by the slick promotional imagery. Skims’s bodysuit makes a great stand-in for a leotard, and how lovely is this sheer-in-all-the-right-places Alexander McQueen skirt? Miu Miu’s take on the pointe slipper is the perfect finishing touch, and don’t forget a bit of Chanel lip color.

Fashion’s favorite coffee table book publisher, Assouline, has just planted its flag at the Bal Harbour Shops in Miami. This marks the French company’s second permanent store in Florida, after their Palm Beach outpost. Pay a visit and pick up some beautifully bound travel tomes or artist monographs. It’s a colorful space, so perhaps you’ll want to match the vibrancy with your own look. Opt for a striped set by Rosie Assoulin (of no relation, for the record). An Assouline tote will help you carry all your new books home, and a pair of Arizona Love raffia sandals will ground the whole experience.

Shelter Island’s latest hotel draw is not new at all; opened in 1927, the property sits on a hill overlooking Crescent Beach and the Peconic Bay. After enjoying a long stint as a classic country resort, the property has been refreshed and re-opened just in time for the Hamptons’ High Season. Located near hotspot Sunset Beach, the Pridwin offers a more low-key setting; in lieu of DJs you’ll find tennis courts and paddle boarding. Check in with comfort in mind—and don’t forget to pack a suit! Toteme’s graphic one-piece will look great beneath a linen cover-up from Bondi Born. And you’ll need a hat, perhaps Prada’s raffia bucket, and a pair of practical yet stylish sandals, like these easy Tkees slides.

Open now through October 9

There’s much to marvel at in Aspen—the views of Aspen Mountain, for one. Adding to the scenery this summer is a new outdoor installation at the Aspen Art Museum, designed by Shigeru Ban. One side of the museum’s façade is now home to “My Dear Mountains”—a site-specific work by the Italian multidisciplinary artist Gaetano Pesce, known for his whimsically wobbly experiments in resin and crayon-colored furnishings. Inside the museum, you’ll see many of these pieces; embrace the mood and have fun with your ensemble. Start with a black Esse Studios dress and accessorize with Bea Bongiasca’s floral enamel necklace and Cult Gaia’s knotted bag. Throw TheOpen’s jersey button-up over it all for a final flourish.

Miami and New York seem to be having a culinary exchange. Miami has imported a Carbone and Sadelle’s, while New York has received ZZ’s Clam Bar and a KYU. The latter is a recent addition to Manhattan’s NoHo restaurant scene, a pan-Asian restaurant helmed by Eleven Madison Park alum Chris Arellanes that has taken over the former Gato space. Dine here wearing something that picks up the jewel tones of the decor. An easy striped dress by Alanui is equal parts comfortable and chic; accessorize with Brandon Blackwood’s mesh bag, Monica Vinader’s gold chain-link earrings, and leather thong sandals from Frame.

The stable of Life House locations is growing, and for a good reason—the well-designed inns offer a boutique experience that draws from each distinct destination. The newest addition in the Berkshires and bills itself as the ideal writer’s retreat. The lounge welcomes creatives to stay all day by a wood-burning fire or find inspiration on a hike through the woods. Should you stick to the former, consider a pair of Missoni pants that wink at the upholstery in the lounge; on top, a crisp white shirt from The Frankie Shop will add a bit of polish. Common Projects’ suede kicks are a more comfortable take on the brown bootie, and a COS bag can fit a laptop should you find yourself in the mood to write.

This summer, Chicago’s The Emily Hotel was crowned with a new rooftop bar, Selva. Serving up Mexican fare and mezcal cocktails, the space is a welcomed addition to the city’s rooftop dining scene. You’ll want to catch the sunset here, so don’t forget a pair of sunnies, like these floral-inspired Loewe glasses. Pair them with an easy striped day dress from Theory, Raye’s black wedges, and a woven catch-all bag from Zara.

Tennis enthusiasts know August means tournament time. If you haven’t already picked up your tickets, do so now. Also, get to shopping for your courtside looks—even better if they’re tennis-themed! Tory Burch is a go-to for classic, preppy tennis wear, but there’s no need to limit her perfect white tennis skirt to the court. When paired with a graphic tee, the look is perfect for spectating. A tennis charm necklace and a visor (it can get sunny in Arthur Ashe!) will finalize the look.

Now through September

Even better than enjoying wine with a meal at Scarpetta is learning more about viticulture there. Hosted by Alessio de Sensi, the single session starts with a history of winemaking and ends with wine tastings—but not before a dessert course. Why not wear a Merlot-colored dress like Norma Kamali’s beloved Diana? And Métier makes the most luxe wine couriers, should you be interested in taking a few bottles home with you. Toteme mules and a gold bracelet will keep your wrist looking swell as you toast to all your new knowledge.
