Man in hysterics as he realises where Wowcher Mystery ‘Maldives’ holiday is actually taking him

A MAN was left stunned by what he ended up with after booking a Mystery Holiday with Wowcher.

Jono Read, who works for the BBC, booked the £89 Mystery Holiday, which doesn’t tell you where you are going until afterward.

He wrote on Twitter: “Expectation vs reality… cheers Wowcher.”

In the tweet, he had an image showing a picture of the Maldives – one of the destination options in the Mystery Holiday.

He also posted what he ended up getting – which was a 1* hotel called Hotel Daisy Budget in Krakow.

While he said he “didn’t expect anywhere exotic,” he said Wowcher not only didn’t let them change destination but couldn’t change airport either.

He explained in the comments: “Apparently if we want to fly from any of the chosen airports we opted for we have to pay £160 more.

However, Jono later said the company “admitted they could be clearer in their T&Cs”.

Other people shared their own stories in the comments, with both positive and negative experiences.

One man wrote: “We got Rome last November, the hotel was a pretty s***** 3* – but clean, good location, and we were only there to sleep.

“Girlfriend was fuming when they called and we hadn’t won the 7-night Barbados trip.”

Another person said they were able to swap, explaining: “We originally got Malta in January which isn’t ideal so swapped to Prague.”

Someone else agreed: “They gave me Krakow and I said I’d been recently so they gave me Algarve.”

A Wowcher spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “As a company we strive to make travel and new experiences as affordable as possible for as many people as possible, and receive positive feedback from many customers who have enjoyed the £99 Mystery Holiday.

“These breaks at these prices come with limitations, and we are not able to guarantee that customers can fly out from their preferred choice of airports.

“However we agree that this could be clearer in our Terms & Conditions and Fine Print, and are in the process of reviewing and updating these accordingly to avoid future disappointment.

“There are always options to upgrade or change departure airports, but we want to provide a basic option at an accessible price point.

“We are sorry that Mr Read had a negative experience and we are currently talking to Mr Read about his experience and have provided him with a refund for his trip.”

The Mystery Holidays are a huge bargain with some amazing destinations on offer.

The Maldives, Barbados, Dubai and Thailand are just some of the best hotspots you could end up in, although these are often very rare.

More common are the two-night breaks in Europe, with a number of cities and beach resorts in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy.

Last year, a woman slammed Wowcher after paying £99 for her Myster Holiday, only to have to pay another £400 for taxis and luggage.

But back in 2019, a lad who bought the £99 Mystery Holiday managed to get a four-night trip to Dubai.
