Man United join race for MLS goalkeeper coveted by ‘two teams’

Manchester United have set their sights on the MLS to find a replacement for the out-of-contract David de Gea. The Old Trafford veteran looks set to move on to pastures new after 12 years of service at the club.

The 32-year-old is the club’s highest earning player and has been a key player for the Red Devils since breaking into the first team to replace Edwin van Der Sar in 2011. However, with a turbulent run of form in recent seasons the Spaniard could be set to leave on a free transfer.

One player that has been eyed as a potential replacement is New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. The Serbian shot-stopper has managed a total of six clean sheets in 17 games so far this season, and only conceeded 21 goals.

If De Gea does sign a new deal, Petrovic would also be an ideal back-up for the Premier League giants, despite becoming a regular starter for the MLS side and with two international caps to his name, the 23-year-old is young enough to still improve. Jack Butland’s loan spell has finished and he has joined Rangers, while Dean Henderson is expected to leave after spending last seaosn on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United aren’t the only Premier League side in need of a highly skilled no.2 between the sticks. Bitter rivals Liverpool have also set their sights on the MLS goalkeeper.

While Alison Becker is one of the first names on the teamsheet, second choice Caoimhin Kelleher is linked with a move away from Anfield this summer. Third choice Adrian could also be set to move with his current contract ending, however Liverpool have offered the Spaniard a new deal.

Petrovic is currently under contract with New England until December 2025 and has the option to extend his deal for another year. The MLS side sit in the driver’s seat and could command a sizeable fee for the Serbian.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United are in clear need of reinforcements during the summer transfer window. The rivals endured difficult spells throughout the season despite managing to secure European football.

Manchester United achieved Champions League football after a third placed finish. The club’s season saw an impressive resurgence under Erik ten Hag despite the drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit.

Liverpool only managed to secure Europa League football after finishing fifth, behind Newcastle United. Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered some disappointing results throughout the season, but managed an impressive late run of form to qualify for a European place.
