United are desperate to strengthen their midfield this summer but have already become frustrated in the attempts to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea. It was claimed that the Old Trafford hierarchy had subsequently moved their focus onto Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.
However, Erik ten Hag is clearly broadening his options, with United reportedly opening talks with Rabiot’s representatives over a potential transfer. The 28-year-old came close to a move to the Premier League outfit last season.
Talks between the two parties eventually broke down but United appear keen to try their luck again this summer. Rabiot has been eyed as part of a contentious effort to improve Ten Hag’s midfield.
According to The Athletic, United have made contact with Rabiot’s agency over whether negotiations can be reprised. It comes after the combative star made clear that he wanted to play in the Premier League.
“I have always said that I’d like to play in England in my career. I still have that desire. I’d like to evolve in the Premier League,” he said recently.
“I haven’t got a Premier League team in mind right now. I haven’t chosen a team or anything. It’s a general thing.
“It’s the league, it’s the level of play that’s going on, that’s what attracts me most. It corresponds to my qualities.”
Chelsea ace Mount had been United’s top midfield target heading into the summer window. The 24-year-old will enter the final year of his Blues contract next month, but the Blues are demanding a fee in the region of £65m.
A £55m proposal submitted by United on Saturday was swiftly rejected. The Old Trafford outfit have left their bid on the table and will apparently re-enter negotiations if Chelsea reduce their price tag.
The report adds that United touched base with the representatives of Brighton’s Caicedo to explore whether a deal might be possible. Reports suggest that Chelsea have pulled out of a move for the Ecuador international, meaning United could have a free run on a move.
However, Brighton are believed to value the midfielder at around £80m. That could scupper any potential transfer this summer.
United struggled for form and fitness in midfield last season, ultimately falling away from the Premier League title race midway through the campaign. Injury to Christian Eriksen and several suspensions picked up by Casemiro hindered the Red Devils’ form.
