Man Utd duo warned of Ten Hag axe due to Garnacho after six-man cull

Manchester United stars Antony and Jadon Sancho have been warned that one of their team-mates could force them to be dropped by Erik ten Hag and become the latest players to face the Dutchman’s axe. Ten Hag has shown his ruthless side on several occasions since arriving at Old Trafford a year ago and continues to mould the squad into his image.

Eric Bailly became the latest player to suffer the Ten Hag cull, having been left out of the club’s pre-season tour squad of the US. He has been left at home after spending last season on loan with Marseille and is deemed surplus to requirements.

The Ivorian has almost certainly played his last game for the club, but despite having a year left on his United contract – and the option to extend it a further year – Ten Hag did not deem it necessary to put him in the shop window on their travels stateside and instead has seemingly axed him from the first-team picture.

It is not the first time Ten Hag has made a brutal call, as last year according to The Sun, five players were told to leave the dressing room as there was not enough space for Phil Jones, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Teden Mengi and Shola Shoretire. Jones and Tuanzebe have since left United, with Bailly expected to follow in their footsteps.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has warned that the emergence of Alejandro Garnacho could see both Sancho and Antony similarly out of the team. “I really like him,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider when asked about the Argentine sensation.

“He’s such a talented winger. And Man United need that. I must admit, I’d totally forgotten about him during his injury last season. But United need that competition for places. I think he can take the fight for that right-wing slot.

“He’ll pile the pressure on Antony and on Sancho to take that spot because [Marcus] Rashford will have that left side locked down. I can see him breaking into the side, keeping Antony and Sancho out, and scoring a lot of goals for Man United.”

While it is unlikely that Antony and Sancho would suffer the same exile as their past and present team-mates, they could be faced with being dropped if Garnacho can perform on the right. Sancho spent extensive time away from the team last year as he was given leave by Ten Hag after the World Cup, but his future remains in doubt having so far failed to live up to expectations.

Antony had a better first season in the Premier League but he still has his doubters, and may be forced to look over his shoulder with Garnacho gunning for more playing time having proven to be a livewire during his breakout campaign.
