Man Utd icon Paul Scholes names two Harry Kane alternatives amid doubt

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has warned Erik ten Hag’s outfit that they may “leave with nothing” if they engage in prolonged negotiations with Tottenham chief Daniel Levy for Harry Kane as he named two alternative options in the summer. The Red Devils are expected to spend big money on a striker for next season as current options may not be up to the required quality of a side hoping to mount a title challenge.

Marcus Rashford has been forced to move off of the left wing in recent weeks while Ten Hag’s two recognised centre-forwards Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial may not be at the club next season. The Burnley loanee may not make a permanent switch to Old Trafford, while Martial could be let go amid concerns regarding his fitness.

Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has been mentioned as an alternative to Kane, though similarly would cost around £100million as he has spearheaded Luciano Spalletti’s side to an 18-point lead at the top of Serie A, while Scholes believes that the Nigerian and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez could be viable alternatives to Kane as he doubts that the England captain will move from Spurs.

“I think there’s a few out there, I just don’t think Kane will move from Tottenham at this point,” Scholes told BT Sport. “I think it’s tricky business dealing with Tottenham, dealing with Daniel Levy, he could string you along right until the very end of the last minute of the transfer window and leave you with nothing.

“I think there’s other players out there, I like Osimhen. I haven’t seen loads of him but I see him more of a [Didier] Drogba-type, possibly more of a Chelsea-type. Is he going to get those kind of crosses at United [that he does for Napoli]? I like Lautaro Martinez as well at Inter Milan, I just think he is Ten Hag’s type of player.

“He likes a centre-forward that will run about, be aggressive, get against people but there are options there. I like Man United’s centre-forwards as it is, I like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial we all know the quality he has got but he just can’t stay fit, he is unreliable. But there’s options out there, let’s hope we can bring one in.”

Meanwhile, United have also entered the race for Jude Bellingham along with the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid as the Borussia Dortmund star is expected to cost upwards of £110m.

Whether the Red Devils would be able to afford both Bellingham and a striker such as Kane, Osimhen or Martinez remains to be seen.

However, there would be an increased likelihood if the Glazers do sell to either public bidder Sir Jim Ratcliffe or Sheikh Jassim of Qatar.
