Ralf Rangnick previews Aston Villa clash

Manchester United will become the first team to win 300 away games in the Premier League if they beat Aston Villa.

The Red Devils travel to Villa Park on Saturday in the hope of moving up the table and making history, having lost their only top-flight game of 2022 so far against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United have won 299 matches away from home in Premier League, meaning another on Saturday would see them become the first side to reach 300.

And no team have won more Premier League games (37) or away matches (17) in the competition’s history than the Red Devils have against Villa.

Cristiano Ronaldo also enjoys facing the Birmingham-based side, having been involved in 11 goals in his nine Premier League starts (eight goals, three assists) – the most the 36-year-old has scored against a single English opponent, even scoring in an FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park in 2007.

Ronaldo boasts a superb record playing Villa

Rangnick’s men will be familiar with Steven Gerrard ‘s side after facing them in the FA Cup on Monday, narrowly winning 1-0.

On the prospect of facing them for a second time in six days, the Red Devils manager told his club’s website : “They played as we expected them to play [on Monday].

“They’re a very flexible, versatile team with a lot of rotation during the game between their full-backs and their eights. We were prepared for that and I think we coped quite well with that.

“At times we had problems to control their second and third striker up front and, in the second half, I think that got a lot better and we controlled the game in the last 20-25 minutes. Now it’s about taking the next steps in the away game.

“Always being dangerous ourselves when we’re in possession of the ball, not have too many giveaway balls when we’re on the counter-attack. Make use of the spaces that were also there in the home game against Villa. This is what we’re all about.”

Meanwhile, Villa boss Gerrard was left to rue Monday’s result but is confident his team can turn the tables in Birmingham.

“The only frustration I had the other night is we didn’t progress in the FA Cup, which is important to us,” the Liverpool legend admitted, with his side having beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford earlier in the season before he took charge.

“The only way to get the feeling and the mood back that I want is to get a big result tomorrow. It’s a unique situation, playing the same team twice in a short space of time, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to bounce back.

“If we can find a similar level of performance, be a little bit more ruthless in the final third and the big calls on the night go in our favour, I’ve got no doubt we can get the result we want.

“We know the quality and the level of player that’s coming to Villa Park and the challenge ahead of us. We’ll be respectful of that, but the players should take big belief and confidence that when they’re at their best, we can create problems for Manchester United.”
