ESPN shocked the sports world on Friday when it announced sweeping layoffs. One of the most prominent names to go was former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy.

Van Gundy had been an important part of ESPN’s NBA coverage for several years, calling multiple NBA Finals with Mike Breen and Mark Jackson.

Van Gundy was on hand for many of the most important moments in recent NBA history, including the first 3-1 comeback in the NBA Finals in 2016.

The former head coach leaves behind big shoes to fill, but one media insider has an idea of who the worldwide leader will tap as his replacement.

Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports is predicting that Doris Burke will replace Van Gundy as one of ESPN’s lead color commentators.

Burke has experience calling the NBA Finals on ESPN Radio, but if she is added to the booth, she would become the first female analyst to call the Finals on television.

Another name in consideration for the job is J.J. Redick, who has worked for ESPN over the last few years as a color commentator and studio analyst.

Redick has become a star at ESPN with regular appearances alongside Stephen A. Smith on First Take, and could continue his rise with a spot on some of the most prestigious broadcasts in the league.
