Minecraft: Complete Guide To Camels

0

With the Trails and Tales update to Minecraft came even more new content for this ever-popular title. Among the many new additions, two mobs make their debut: the Sniffer and the Camel. While the Sniffer is certainly interesting, many players are on the hunt for a Camel to become their new mount. After all, mounted travel is second only to the mighty Elytra in Minecraft, and the Camel offers a unique type of riding experience.

Unfamiliar players, however, are sure to have many questions about this enigmatic humped creature. This guide, then, will explain where it spawns, how to tame it, whether you can equip it with horse armor, and a lot more besides.

Where To Find Camels

Camels only spawn in desert villages, and will not respawn if killed. Luckily, the vast majority of mobs will not attack camels, meaning they are unlikely to perish while you aren’t paying attention. They do wander, however, unless encircled by a wall a minimum of two blocks high.

How To Keep Camels

Keeping camels is, in some ways, more difficult than keeping a range of other Minecraft mobs. This is because camels can scale walls and fences at will. To keep them from wandering off, you should tie them off with a lead, or build walls a minimum of two blocks high around them. However, they are quite tanky (with 16 hearts), and most mobs will not attack them. This makes them very durable as mounts. To heal an injured camel, feed them a cactus.

Despite their love of cacti, camels will still be damaged by touching cactus blocks. Therefore, it’s advised not to plant cacti in their enclosures.

Tempting & Moving Camels

Camels can be tempted by holding a cactus. While a player is holding a cactus, a camel will attempt to follow the player, unless it is currently sitting. The camel will stop following the player if more than ten blocks ever separate it and the player.

Camels cannot be pushed while sitting by players or blocks, and if their standing space is obstructed they will stand up and suffocate. Sitting camels stand up again after about 7–10 seconds.

However, it is often easier to move camels by riding them, since this only requires a saddle. Once a camel is saddled, it can be ridden and controlled with the typical Minecraft movement keys.

Taming Camels

Unlike many mobs in Minecraft, camels do not need to be tamed. Instead, they spawn in already friendly to the player. They will not run away and will allow themselves to be saddled immediately. To ride them, simply use the same key as you would on a horse while they are lying down.

Breeding Camels

Camels can be bred by enclosing at least two camels together and then feeding them cactuses. This will cause the camels to spawn a baby camel, which will take four in-game days to mature. This can be sped up by feeding the baby camel cactuses. After an adult pair has bred, they will be unable to do so again for five real-time minutes.

How To Use Camels

Two players riding a camel through the desert in Minecraft

Camels are currently the only vanilla mount in Minecraft able to seat two players, which makes them ideal for multiplayer servers. They are also able to climb up 1.5 blocks without jumping, in contrast to horses who can only climb one block. This allows them to clear fences and walls fairly easily, which is convenient while riding (but inconvenient when stabling).

As an added bonus, most mobs will not attack camels, with the exceptions being Vindicators named Johnny, and Zoglins. Most hostile mobs also cannot reach a player mounted on a camel. This is due to the camel’s height of 2.3 blocks tall. The only mobs able to damage players mounted on a camel are:

  • Spiders
  • Wolves
  • Magma Cubes
  • Slimes

Dashing Charge

While riding a camel, your experience bar will be replaced by a dash bar. This is due to the camel’s special ability, Dashing Charge. During Dashing Charge, the camel will propel itself twelve blocks forward and one block up at high speed. To dash on a camel, hold down the jump key. After executing a Dashing Charge, there will be a 2.75 second cooldown before the player can do so again.

Items That Can Be Equipped By a Camel

In order to control a camel, it will need to be saddled. Players can place a saddle on a camel by walking up to it and using the saddle, or by sneaking up to it and opening the mount’s inventory. To retrieve a saddle, it can be removed from the mob’s inventory. It will also drop on the ground if the mob is killed. Sadly, camels cannot wear horse armor. In fact, saddles, leads, and cacti are the only objects in the game which currently have an interaction with the camel. All in all, they’re fascinating creatures, but it’s vital to take note of what they can and can’t do (as is the case with the mobs of Minecraft Legends).
