Another fighter has been confirmed for Mortal Kombat 2. Currently in production, the follow-up to the 2021 film will feature a mix of some returning cast members along with some new fighters not featured in the first film. A new image from the set shared on Twitter by producer Todd Garner features a cast chair with the MK2 logo along with the name “Baraka,” confirming the character’s inclusion in the sequel. The image doesn’t reveal who will be playing the sharp-toothed fighter in the film.

Other new fighters confirmed to appear in Mortal Kombat 2 include Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), King Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), Queen Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), and Quan Chi (Damon Herriman). Returning fighters from the first movie expected to be back include Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).

Garner has been teasing the film in other ways on social media. One recent photo shared to Twitter reveals a mix of new and returning cast members dining together as production gets started. The photo reveals a sneak peek at Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, a character fans were disappointed to see absent in the first movie. He will presumably have a much bigger presence in the sequel.

In another recent tweet teasing Mortal Kombat 2, Garner also said, “Off we go! I’m thrilled to start & trust me, we’ve listened. We’ve learned from the mistakes & are committed to making the best MK2 possible. I,100% support everyone’s right to their opinion, but I have the right not to be abused & will block you. So…let’s have an amazing ride!”

Simon McQuoid returns to the director’s chair for Mortal Kombat 2. The screenplay comes from Jeremy Slater. McQuoid is producing alongside Garner, James Wan, Michael Clear, and E. Bennett Walsh.

Baraka Will Return to the Big Screen

The Baraka character previously appeared on the big screen in 1997. He was featured in Mortal Kombat Annihilation, the sequel to the original live-action Mortal Kombat movie released in 1995. Dennis Keiffer portrayed Baraka in that film.

Baraka was first introduced in the franchise as a playable fighter in the video game Mortal Kombat II, released in 1993. He is portrayed as a villain, working at the behest of the game’s final boss, Shao Kahn. He is a part of an Outworld race known as the Tarkatans, known for their distinct appearance with long, sharp teeth and retractable blades in their forearms. Tarkatans, especially Baraka, are also known for their unpredictably violent behavior.

Mortal Kombat 2 doesn’t yet have a release date.
