The Moulin Rouge is on the hunt for talented Perth dancers who can twirl, kick and dance their way through its current spectacular show, Féerie.

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, artistic director Janet Pharaoh is holding auditions in Perth to recruit dancers before heading to other Australian capital cities and New Zealand.

The French cabaret, famous for its high-kicking cancan dancers and flamboyant feathered costumes, is the place many dancers from Australia go to find work, providing they make the cut.

In fact, for many years much of the Moulin Rouge cast has consisted of Australian artists.

Once a hangout for the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the nightclub has long stood for everything French and naughty and winning a dance contract at the venue is widely considered an important achievement for the lucky few who get a part in one of the venue’s performances.

The last time the Moulin Rouge’s artistic team travelled to Australia was in 2018 with the next round of auditions taking place at 1pm on Saturday July 1 at the Valerie Heston School of Dance located at 2/22 Sphinx Way in Bibra Lake.

According to a statement from the Moulin Rouge artistic team, criteria includes strong classical dance training, a minimum size of 5’9” for girls and 6’1” for boys, a well-balanced figure, charisma and the capacity to assimilate choreography.
