Mum potty trains her 6 month old baby

A mum left other parents in awe when she revealed her son began going to the potty by himself when he was just six months old.

The revelation shocked mums and dads, who had resigned themselves to changing their babies’ nappies for the first few years of their children’s lives.

However, TikTok user @montessori.mothering claims her son, who has just turned one, is able to go “on the potty 90 per cent of the time” and he picked up the habit at just six months old.

The woman said it was “not a joke” and, in a video posted to the platform, claimed it was very possible to train your child to use the potty from an early age.

She said she uses a technique known as elimination communication, which involves putting a baby on a potty from an early age when they signal that they need to go to the toilet.

In a video explaining how she trained her son the woman describes putting him on the potty every “two to three hours” and every time they wake up and after eating.

To entice him into the habit, she always made sure toilet time was fun and that there was “no pressure” by giving him a special toy book and making “grunts/shush sound”.

To ease the process, she said it was key to “look for cues they have to go potty”.

Wearing cloth nappies or training underwear was important too, she said, so that the baby feels wetness and knows when they peed.

In another video she explained that elimination communication toilet training could start “from birth”.

Her TikTok videos about the toilet training method have proved popular with parents wanting to ditch the nappies and have garnered more than 1.5 million views.

Many parents expressed disbelief – and jealousy – that the mum didn’t have to worry about nappies.

“How? Mine just turned one and I need to teach him asap,” one person wrote.

“Too much work … I rather buy the diapers,” another commented. “They’ll get potty trained one day.”

Others agreed elimination communication was a tried and tested method, having used it to great success with their children.

“My boy was pooping in the toilet at three months old,” one commented.

“Same with my kids, So much easier than a toddler with his own opinions,” another said.

Late last year we reported on another TikTok mum who claimed she had defied the odds in raising her son and getting him using a potty when he was just a day old.

Mum Margaret, based in Australia, said she wanted to disprove the idea that babies can’t be potty trained when she gave birth to her son.

To provide proof of her claim she managed to get him using the potty from birth, Margaret posted a photo of her newborn being held over a plastic potty on TikTok.

She captioned the photo: “He stopped pooping at night at four weeks.”

Margaret claims she managed this by using the same strategy – “elimination communication.”

Writing on TikTok, Margaret added her son could let her know that he needed to go from five weeks old, by grunting, Kidspot reports.

At 13 months, she added he was walking himself to the potty and was wearing underwear, which stayed dry all day.

By 20 months, Margaret claims her tot was staying dry all night – meaning he was basically potty trained.
