SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A naked woman armed with a gun and knife on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge created major traffic gridlock for evening rush hour commuters trying to drive to the East Bay.

The incident began at 4:38 p.m. Tuesday. Bay Bridge motorists told 911 dispatchers that a woman, who was “completely naked,” fired a gun at several cars, threatened random victims with a knife, and attempted to get into cars on the bridge, investigators told KRON4.

The erratic woman prompted the California Highway Patrol to close Interstate-80’s eastbound lanes near the toll plaza, as well as the I-80 connector ramp to I-880 in Oakland.

CHP officers found the woman walking on the bridge just before 6 p.m. and ordered her to drop her weapons. The woman followed officers’ orders and was apprehended. An ambulance was called to the scene and she was transported to a local hospital for medical and psychiatric evaluations, according to the CHP.

No injuries were reported from the bizarre incident.

Even after all lanes reopened at 6:30 p.m., a massive traffic backup remained on the bridge. Cars moved at a crawling pace along the eastbound lanes. San Francisco city streets were also impacted from lines of cars waiting to get on the bridge.

The CHP gave the following summary of what unfolded on the Bay Bridge:

“At approximately 4:38 PM, the California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a reckless driver traveling eastbound on Interstate 80. The caller advised dispatchers that … the female driver brandished a firearm at them before speeding off.  The suspect briefly stopped in traffic lanes and exited her vehicle where she brandished a knife and started yelling at drivers in other vehicles. The suspect then reentered her vehicle and continued driving eastbound. As the suspect approached the SFOBB toll plaza, she once again stopped the vehicle and exited, now completely naked, with a firearm in her hand. Witnesses reported that the suspect then began shooting the firearm in the air before firing shots at other vehicles nearby. There have been no reports of injuries as a result of the shooting,” CHP investigators wrote.

Bay Area bridge incidents have caused severe traffic delays for two out of the last three business days.
