NBA 2K24 is set to release later this year and while there are a ton of active NBA players who could have been chosen for the cover, 2K is getting tons of praise for who they chose.

On Thursday, 2K revealed that the late-great Kobe Bryant will be featured on the two core editions of their upcoming release. There will be the ‘Kobe Bryant Edition’ and the ‘Black Mamba Edition.’

“Sharing the Mamba Mentality with the next generation. Introducing our #NBA2K24 cover athlete, Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant Edition Black Mamba Edition Pre-order your copy tomorrow,” 2K announced.

Bryant famously won the No. 24 with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2006 until his retirement in 2016, winning two of his five NBA titles and an MVP award in the process.

Fans are applauding 2K for making the right choice for the edition sharing Kobe’s iconic number. Some have already pledged to buy the game to commemorate the NBA icon:

Kobe Bryant was a 14-time All-Star and a five-time NBA champion who played his entire career with the Lakers. He retired as the No. 3 leading scorer in NBA history.

Tragically, he lost his life in 2020 in a helicopter crash that claimed the life of his daughter Gianna and seven other people.

He was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame later that year and to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team the year after.
