New 16-bit fan remake of Sonic Triple Trouble can be downloaded for free

Although quite a few Sonic the Hedgehog games came out during the 1990s, the classic trilogy of Genesis Sonic titles, as well as Sonic CD, tend to receive the most attention from fans. This isn’t unwarranted, as those games remain incredibly fun to play and laid the groundwork for the entire series moving forward. But many fans would argue that the Sega Game Gear received some worthwhile Sonic games in their own right, particularly 1994’s Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble. Well, thanks to devoted fan Noah Copeland, you can experience Sonic Triple Trouble in a whole new way. Specifically, Copeland created an ambitious 16-bit fan remake of Sonic Triple Trouble that PC players can download for free.

With this remake, Copeland sought to answer this question: “What if Sonic Triple Trouble had been originally released on the Sega Genesis / MegaDrive, after Sonic 3 & Knuckles?” Upon looking at gameplay footage, you can tell that Copeland went all in on realizing this vision. Not only do Sonic and Tails have their sprites ripped right out of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but the stages now sport an impressive level of detail and polish.

Triple the quality

Of course, the improvements apply to more than just the visuals. All the stages now have revised layouts and new mechanics and enemies to spice things up. The special stages also take place in fully 3D environments to allow for smoother play. Additionally, the controls and physics now feel closer to those of the Genesis installments, and players can even switch between Sonic and Tails whenever they want.

Much like other similar projects, this fan remake of Sonic Triple Trouble fully demonstrates the immense passion and talent of the Sonic fan community. Those who have felt a little down about the state of the recent Sonic Origins collection may want to give this remake a go.
