New Images Show Colin Farrell on The Penguin Set for the First Time

Colin Farrell’s return as the Penguin is moving closer as the first set images of The Batman spin-off show surfaced online.

Colin Farrell is once again unrecognizable in new images and video from the set of The Batman’s Penguin spin-off series. Donning heavy prosthetics and dressed in a suit, Farrell appeared on the set of the HBO Max series for the first time, and it clearly looks like he means business – even if that is the dubious kind of business that his slippery character is known for involving himself in.

Last year, The Batman brought to life a different version of Gotham City and its inhabitants than has ever been seen on screen before. Robert Pattinson’s younger iteration of the Dark Knight faces off with Paul Dano’s Riddler in a battle of wits rather than clever gadgets and snappy one-liners, but also in the mix is Farrell’s Penguin who is more than ready to make his own mark on the underbelly of the city.

In new images and a video from the set of the spinoff series, there is little new information to be found, but seeing Farrell back in his impressive make-up is a good reminder of how different Farrell’s Penguin is to any other iteration put on screen before him.

There is not too much known about the plot of the series so far, but it will take place in the immediate aftermath of The Batman and chart Oswald Cobblepot’s attempts to become a Gotham City kingpin in the wake of Carmine Falcone’s death. However, one person that could become an adversary to Oswald’s plans other than Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego is crime boss Salvatore Maroni, who it was recently revealed will be played by Clancy Brown in the show.

The Penguin Series Was a Surprise For Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell’s Penguin was one of the highlights of Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022, but the idea of him being handed his own TV series was not one that was on the actor’s radar when taking on the character. In a previous interview, Farrell said:

“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

There has been no word yet on whether Farrell will be reprising the role again in The Batman Part II, and it is likely all going to rest on exactly how the story of The Penguin series plays out. The sequel to The Batman is already expected to have Barry Keoghan’s Joker playing a pivotal role, while Paul Dano’s RIddler is also expected to be back again. Considering this version Batman is not heavily focused on flashy action set-pieces and all about the brooding detective aspect of Batman’s comic book appearances, having a multitude of villains seems like it would not play to Reeves’ vision. However, Farrell’s Penguin did not have a lot of scenes in the movie and that could also be the case if he appears in the sequel.
