Newcastle have reportedly made a new bid for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos but could give up on the transfers of Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile and Reims’ Hugo Ekitike. The Magpies are desperate for reinforcements as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Newcastle have been in dismal form this season and have claimed just one win in all competitions.
Last weekend they suffered the ignominy of losing at home to League One side Cambridge United in the FA Cup third round.
And boss Eddie Howe knows his best chance of staying up will be to bolster his ranks with new signings this month.
Howe has already delved into the transfer market by landing right-back Kieran Trippier and striker Chris Wood.
And the 44-year-old could make Carlos his third signing of the window.

Monaco have reportedly set an asking price in the region £50million for the talented 20-year-old. And he is currently out injured, which makes a move for him risky.
Ekitike could also stay put where he is as Newcastle no longer view obtaining a striker as a priority following Wood’s arrival from Burnley this week.
The Magpies will surely make more signings before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month. But it remains to be seen who they go for.
Howe knows he needs to turn his side’s fortunes around quickly if they are to have any chance of beating the drop.
The north east side are two points adrift of 17th-placed Watford and are set to go head-to-head with the Hornets at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Defeat for Newcastle would see them fall five points behind Claudio Ranieri’s men and would pile the pressure on to the mega-rich club.
