A video of Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis is going viral on social media. In the video, Fadnavis can be seen making derogatory remarks about Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

The video is being shared with the claim that Fadnavis insulted the Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar in the Maharashtra Assembly.

Fact Crescendo received this video with fact-check requests on our WhatsApp Tipline (9049053770).

We found that the video is clipped. A selectively edited clip is being peddled with a false claim.

WHAT’S THE CLAIM?

In a 10-second clip, Devendra Fadnavis says, “Veer Savarkar was an apologist, Veer Savarkar was homosexual, Veer Savarkar was not a freedom fighter.”

FACT-CHECK

Since the logo of the Marathi news channel ABP Majha is visible in the viral clip, we looked for the original video on their YouTube channel.

Subsequently, we found a complete clip of Devendra Fadnavis’s speech given in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on 2 August.

In this unedited video, Devendra Fadnavis was addressing the controversial statements made by right-wing leader Sambhaji Bhide concerning Mahatma Gandhi.

Sambhaji Bhide, the leader of Shiv Pratishthan Hindustan, reportedly claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was “brought up and educated by Muslim parents.”

The Congress party has strongly objected to Bhide’s offensive comments and has called for his arrest. Congress MLAs also raised this matter in both chambers of the state legislature on 2 August.

In response, Devendra Fadnavis said, “Though Sambhaji Bhide does noble work but he has no authority to make such a statement against an idol of the country.”

Fadnavis reassured that appropriate measures would be taken in response to Bhide’s actions. Additionally, he mentioned that action will also be taken against the Congress publication ‘Shidori’ for its objectionable comments targeting Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar.

“Objectionable articles have been written against Veer Savarkar in the Congress mouthpiece ‘Shidori’, which state that Veer Savarkar was a ‘maafiveer’ (apologist); he was a homosexual and did not take part in the freedom struggle. So, similar action will be taken against ‘Shidori’,” Fadnavis said.

In a comparative video, it becomes evident that Fadnavis was citing an article from the ‘Shidori’ newspaper. The remarks were not of his own making.

Nandkishore Kuyate, the Congress state secretary, filed a formal complaint against Bhide at the Rajapeth police station. Later, Bhide and two of his associates were charged under Sections 153 A, 500, 505 (2), and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Another FIR was also registered against Bhide in Nashik.

CONCLUSION

It is clear that an edited video clip is being circulated with a false claim that Devendra Fadnavis insulted Savarkar by labeling him as homosexual and an apologist. In reality, Fadnavis was referencing an article in which these statements were made.
