NYCFC have endured ‘long and agonising’ process with new £613m stadium

The process of building New York City FC’s new stadium has been “long and agonising”, according to the club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak. The brand new £613m stadium is the first football-specific stadium in New York, a new feat for both the club and MLS.

The stadium is set to be ready for the 2027 MLS season. Due to the scale of the project the club have been forced to play ‘home’ games at alternative venues.

NYCFC have been playing their home games at the Yankee Stadium since 2015 while building has been taking place. Due to scheduling issues with Major League Baseball side, the New York Yankees, the team have also played games in New Jersey and Connecticut in recent years.

The new stadium will be based in the heart of the city, much to both fan’s and player’s delight. It will neighbour Citi Field, home to baseball’s New York Mets, and Flushing Meadows, which is the home of the US Open.

While there is still much work to be done, MLS fans will have plenty to look forward too. The club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, who also is the chairman of Manchester City, has recently provided an update on the building work.

“This has been a very long and agonising process, (it is) not easy to build a stadium in New York City, very, very hard,” Mubarak said, via the Daily Mail.

‘It’s very important to have your stadium, you know that in any team. We’ve built, I think a great organization, a great club, a great fan base in New York. And now we’re going to give this team a wonderful stadium.”

Mubarak also believes that the new stadium will not only benefit the players and the supporters. He said: “This team needs its stadium and that will add tremendous value to the community. It’ll create jobs. It will create, I think, a home to this great club. And that’s critical.”

Once complete the stadium is set to have a capacity of 25,000 and will feature an ‘iconic, activated cube entranceway’. The building will also feature the stadium’s name, which will include the name of a yet-to-be-decided sponsor, in bold letters.

Fans will be hoping that the new stadium will provide the team with a much-needed boost after enduring a difficult season so far. The team are currently sat in 11th place and look to fall well short of their last triumphn which came in the form of the MLS Cup back in 2021.
