Old Shanghai owners donate food as they await their future

Old Shanghai restaurant owners have been allowed back into their former kitchens in Fremantle to salvage the food they would have served to customers before being abruptly locked out last month.

On June 2, shop owners sorted through food items and retrieved utensils and other belongings that have sat dormant after the locks at the Fremantle food court were abruptly changed on May 25, leaving employees without access to their livelihood.

“Today we salvaged what we could in all three shops and donated it to a local food bank in hopes that we can spread some love to those who are in need!” Siam Kitchen shared on social media.

“Regardless of what is happening it only takes a second to be kind.

“We are still unsure what the future holds and we will remain closed for now till we know our next step.”

Business owners have so far declined to comment on last month’s abrupt closure of the markets, citing advice from their lawyers.

Workers arrived at the popular food institution on May 25 for a regular Thursday of business only to find the locks had been changed and no one could get in.

Another of the market’s businesses, Taka’s Kitchen, posted to social media the same day they would be closed for the day, but the next day shocked followers by writing they — and other dining outlets in Old Shanghai — would be closed for the foreseeable future.

“Sorry, the entire Old Shanghai building food court Fremantle (Taka’s kitchen, Siam’s kitchen and Chinese BBQ palas) is temporarily closed until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience,” they posted.

On May 30, just five days later, a real estate leasing sign appeared in the window of the Old Shanghai building.

No official reason has been given for the closure by the businesses, Old Shanghai’s lessee or the owners of the historic Henderson Street building.

Landgate records show that the Old Shanghai building (which trades under O.S Markets) is owned by Marta Ramona Piercy and Stephen Richard Piercy and leased by a company operated by one of Perth’s top accountants — Garry Trevor.

The abrupt closure of Old Shanghai came days after the WA Supreme Court cleared Mr Trevor to end his tenure as the Bell Group NV liquidator.

Mr Trevor has also not answered questions about the Fremantle venue.
