One-third of people in the U.S. have tattoos: Survey

Whether you’re in a stuffy corporate office or at the playground, tattoos have become increasingly popular over the years.

A recent survey from the Pew Research Center found that nearly one-third of American adults are more accepting of tattoos, whether they have a tattoo themselves or can simply appreciate the art on another person’s body.

The results show that those most likely to get inked are women (38% compared to 27% of men), black people (39% compared with 35% Latino, 32% white and 14% Asian), and younger adults.

The survey found 46% of people between the ages of 30 and 49 and 41% of those under 30 sport at least one piece of body art, while the number drops to 25% in the 50-to-64 age range, and 13% for those over  65.

Those with some college education or less are more likely to have a tattoo than those with university degrees.

Religion also plays a factor, with 41% of those unaffiliated with a religion having at least one tattoo, compared with 29% of those affiliated with a religion.

More than half (51%) of the LGBTQ community have at least one tattoo, with women (68%) the highest in this group. By comparison, 31% of straight Americans have at least one tattoo.

The most common reasons for getting a tattoo: 47% say they wanted to make a statement about what they believe, while 32% did it for purely aesthetic intentions.

A 2012 Ipsos Reid poll found that two in 10 Canadians (22%) had at least one tattoo on their body, just a smidge higher than Americans (21%) at the time.

Those in British Columbia (28%) were most likely to boast a tattoo, followed by Quebecers (25%), Albertans (23%), people in the Atlantic (21%), Saskatchewan and Manitoba residents (20%) and Ontario (19%).

The poll found 10% of Canadians with at least one tattoo regret it.
