Oppenheimer viewers fuming after missing censored scenes – including nudity

Oppenheimer has been censored with CGI during a scene showing a naked Florence Pugh.

The British star portrays Jean Tatlock, the mistress of the father of the atomic bomb J Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy).

Pugh, 27, is required to be naked in a number of scenes that earned director Christopher Nolan his first R-rating in over a decade.

However, film censors in Middle East and several Asian countries, including India, weren’t happy with the nudity.

An extended scene in which a topless Tatlock lounges in a hotel room with an equally naked Oppenheimer has covered up Pugh’s modesty with a computer-generated black dress.

The scene has also been censored in Bangladesh and Indonesia, according to Newsweek.

Several viewers in the territories have also confirmed the numerous sex scenes with Murphy and Pugh have been heavily edited.

While the CGI robe might confuse cinemagoers in the West, these changes were made to ensure a big-screen release in countries with strict censorship rules.

In India, films aiming for a U/A certification can only allow moderate adult themes to let children below 12 years of age into the screening, according to India’s Central Board of Film Certification.

This could help Oppenheimer make even more of a splash at the box office for Universal Pictures after an already successful opening weekend spurred on by the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

Even so, the decision has generated debate online, with @LatterDayDom tweeting: “Good. They should release this version in the US as an optional version to watch.”

But @Kellansworld argued: “Why is this necessary? It’s not like the nudity is distasteful or used inappropriately.

“Everything has intent, and when you just wack a plain black smooth cloth over it looks weird af.”

And @katara_uwu claimed: “This is what I watched! I missed half of the movie because of the censored stuff broo!” (sic)

Despite the censorship and its harrowing subject matter, Oppenheimer has already made $180 million at the box office and has been dubbed one of the best movies of the year.

Oppenheimer is out now.
