Oppo’s Reno10 Series to bring new periscope lens design to camera module – Details

Oppo’s Reno10 Pro, Oppo Reno10 Pro Plus: Oppo is all set to launch add new smartphone in its popular Reno series. According to reports, the company will launch Oppo Reno 10 Series next month. Ahead of the launch, the company has confirmed that its Reno 10 Pro+ will bring its new periscope lens design to the camera module. This setup reduces what could be a thick camera bump to make this device the slimmest and lightest periscope telephoto handset in the industry.

According to the company, the periscope design creates a 3x optical telephoto setup that delivers beautifully-proportioned portraits with a soft bokeh background.

Stacking lens—one over the other—to create optical zoom and/or telephoto lens results in thicker camera bumps on a smartphone. OPPO’s periscope lens is a workaround for this vertical height constraint.

Usually, when light enters the camera, it goes through the lens array straight to the sensor. But with the periscope design, the stacked lens and the sensor are turned sideways. In the Reno 10 Pro+, for instance, the optically-stabilised telephoto lens is offset by 90 degrees to focus light onto the image sensor after it travels through a prism; this results in a telephoto lens module that does not protrude too far out from the phone. The Reno10 Pro+ has a periscope module that is 0.96mm thinner than other devices.

The OPPO Reno10 Pro+’s 3x telephoto lets you shoot portraits from a distance – just like a DSLR – for more natural facial proportions. These portraits boast a natural optical bokeh that separates the subject from the background to add depth to photographs.

In outdoor settings, the telephoto lens also compresses the gap between the portrait subject and distant elements in a scene—monuments, buildings, and mountains—to create dramatic but well-composed portraits.

Oppo’s Reno10 Pro, Oppo Reno10 Pro Plus: 3x Telephoto

According to the company, at 64MP, Oppo Reno 10’s telephoto portrait camera is the highest megapixel telephoto portrait camera in the industry. It is backed by a 1/2-inch image sensor that lets you snap portraits with up to 3x telephoto with OIS.

The 50MP main snapper comes with the Sony IMX890 sensor and a 1/1.56-inch ultra-large sensor size for high light intake. It also supports OIS and all-pixel omnidirectional focus for added stability and clarity.

The Reno 10 Pro and Pro+ also sport the 8MP Sony IMX355, a 112° ultra-wide-angle camera with a 1/4-inch sensor. Its exceptional sensitivity to light produces clear images even in dark environments, while its rapid frame rate of up to 120FPS makes it ideal for shooting fast-moving objects. The IMX355 boasts a broad dynamic range that allows it to preserve details in bright and dark areas of a photograph.

And finally, you get the 32MP Sony IMX709 sensor with AF for selfies and precise facial recognition even in low light. This RGBW sensor on the front camera is customised for OPPO, where the colour W (white) is inserted into each RGGB pixel array; this increases the light intake by 60% when compared to general RGGB lens. It is backed by a 1/2.47-inch sensor and a 90° FOV for wider selfies.

To further enhance image processing, the Reno10 Pro+ packs the Ultra-Clear Imaging Processing Engine—powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 platform—for ultra-clear photos where every detail is preserved with remarkable precision.

Oppo’s Reno10 Pro, Oppo Reno10 Pro Plus: Anti-reflective Lens Coating

To ensure that a maximum amount of light reaches the sensor, the camera lens on the Reno 10 Series comes with ALD (atomic layer deposition) coating that prevents green and red glare. This reduces light reflectivity by up to 70% to ensure that unwanted reflections are minimised for clearer and more vibrant images.

Additionally, the Reno 10 Pro+ comes with camera algorithms that kick in for 4K videos to fuse two frames of long- and short-exposure image information in real-time to widen the original dynamic range four times. Simultaneously, the AI Noise Reduction (AINR) algorithm intelligently identifies noise pixels in night-time videos and denoises each frame for noise reduction. Also, the Reno 10 Pro+ utilises an AI Depth algorithm that has undergone extensive training with millions of images. It calculates the distance between objects and characters in the background to create a precise depth map for beautiful bokeh.
