Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All At Once leads nominations


Nominations for the 95th Academy Awards have been announced.

The highly-anticipated lists were revealed on Tuesday with Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams presenting the nominees in-person for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

American sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the way with a total of 11 nominations while German adaptation All Quiet on the Western Front, which led the BAFTA nominations, and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin each have nine.

The ten-strong category for Best Picture includes The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Avatar: The Way Of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, All Quiet On The Western Front, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Fabelmans, Tar, Triangle Of Sadness and Women Talking.

Films Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Whale did not feature on the list despite being popular with audiences and critics alike.

Actors Colin Farrell and Bill Nighy have received their first best actor Oscar nominations for their roles in Banshees Of Inisherin and Living.

The pair will be up against Irish actor Paul Mescal for his role in Aftersun (from Edinburgh director Charlotte Wells), and US heavyweights Austin Butler for Elvis and Brendan Fraser for The Whale.

The Academy Award nominees for best actress in a leading role were Cate Blanchett for Tar; Ana de Armas for Blonde; Andrea Riseborough for To Leslie; Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans; and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Brendan Gleeson has been nominated for an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role for The Banshees Of Inisherin, alongside co-star Barry Keoghan.

Also nominated alongside the Irish actors are Brian Tyree Henry for Causeway, Judd Hirsch for The Fabelmans and Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The nominees for best actress in a supporting role are Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; Hong Chau for The Whale; Kerry Condon for The Banshees Of Inisherin; Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once; and Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Rihanna and Lady Gaga will go head to head at the Oscars for best original song.

The nominees for the category were Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sung by Rihanna; Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga from Top Gun: Maverick; Applause by Diane Warren from Tell It Like A Woman; Naatu Naatu by MM Keeravani & Chandrabose from RRR; and This Is A Life from Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was among the films nominated for Animated Feature Film along side Marcel The Shell with Shoes On, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Sea Beast and Turning Red.

Bill Nighy said he and his Living co-stars are “honoured” for him to get his first best actor Oscar nomination for the film as it will encourage audiences to watch it.

The 73-year-old actor said: “Everyone associated with Living is honoured by the Academy’s nomination and grateful for the spotlight it throws upon the film.

“We hope it will encourage people to see it. I was surrounded by assassins and this belongs to them all.”
