Outlander’s Sam Heughan addresses ‘pretty difficult’ cameo in prequel

Sam Heughan has starred as Jamie Fraser in the Scottish time-travelling series for 10 years.

But with Outlander coming to an end very soon, fans are keen to know more about the prequel, Blood of My Blood.

The series will focus on Jamie’s parents, Brian and Ellen, and how they fell in love with each other, which means it’s unlikely the highlander will feature.

Teasing the spin-off, actor Sam told Radio Times: “I guess it’s a legacy, right? It’s what we’ve created.

“When we first went to Scotland and we created the studio where we shoot Outlander, there was nothing there and now it’s this huge facility.

“It’s created so many jobs in Scotland, so many people have been employed.

“I’m sure the new show will be just as successful, if not more so.”

Asked if he could pop up in a cameo, Sam wasn’t too keen with the suggestion.

“I mean, I’ll never say no,” he confessed. “But I think it could be pretty difficult as it’s about Jamie’s parents when they’re young…”

While Sam may not appear in the prequel, there’s still plenty more adventures for Jamie in Outlander, especially with the Revolutionary War taking place and his illegitimate son William (Charles Vandervaart) fighting for the British.

In the latest episode, Where the Waters Meet, Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) came face-to-face with William when she was taken prisoner and held at Fort Ticonderoga.

She used the opportunity to report back to Jamie about his son was doing and what he has been up to.

Writer Diana Galbadon spoke about the family’s complicated relationships with one another and how this was at the forefront of the episode.

She told Parade: “She wants to tell Jamie all about his son, as she knows what Jamie’s feelings for Willie are.

“At the same time, she’s had perhaps two minutes of conversation with said son, so there’s a limit to how much she can say.”

The last thing Jamie wants is to face his son on the battlefield – can he persuade William to switch sides?

Outlander season 7 is available to stream on Lionsgate+ in the UK. The full interview with Sam Heughan is available to read in this week’s Radio Times, out now.
