Outlander’s William Ransom star could feel ‘weird pain’ from ‘gruesome’ injury

Newcomer Charles Vandervaart has opened up about joining Outlander as William Ransom and filming the moment he has a stick impaled in his arm.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Charles laughed: “Oh man! I don’t know why William left England, he had such a nice life in England.

“He had a mansion and there’s no dangers. Then yeah, all of a sudden he’s thrown into this swamp and he gets his arm impaled.

“It’s all puss and gross at one point and he almost gets him amputated.

“It was really cool doing it and I had a weird sensation that I remember from that day.”

Charles went on to detail how the injury was filmed: “They put a prosthetic arm on, I remember I had to go and have a cast for my arm and sit and let this mould dry for a few hours and then they put this fake arm over the top of my arm, this sleeve.

“It had the wound on it and I had this weird psychosomatic feeling where I could feel like a weird pain in my arm as it looked so realistic.

“I think my brain thought I had an injury. It as so realistic in real life and really gruesome to watch that puss come out of my own arm.

“It was like an outer-body experience. I’m glad he got to keep his arm!”

Despite filming a rather gruesome scene, Charles said it’s “fantastic” to be part of the Outlander family.

“It’s fantastic. I’ve only received like 99.9 percent love over the internet and I’m very thankful for the fans that we have on the show.

“It’s a very great fandom. Some of y’all are a little bit nuts but I love you for it. But no, it’s been amazing.”

He added: “It’s weird though because we started filming this over a year ago now and it’s strange, the scenes that are coming out, I literally filmed over a year ago and I’m so excited for people to see it and for it all to come out.”

Outlander season 7 is available to stream on Lionsgate+ now.
