A presenter who works for the broadcaster, who has not been identified publicly, has been accused of paying a teenager more than £35,000 for explicit pictures from when the youngster in question was 17 years old.
A spokesperson for the firm outlined in a statement that the BBC first became ‘aware of a complaint’ in May, before new allegations were presented to them on Thursday July 6 ‘of a different nature’.
‘In addition to our own inquiries we have also been in touch with external authorities, in line with our protocols,’ they stated, adding that a ‘male member of staff has been suspended’.
‘We expect to be in a position to provide a further update in the coming days as the process continues. The BBC board will continue to be kept up to date,’ it concluded.
In a tweet, one person pointed out the unusual position that the BBC is in when reporting on the news concerning the claims that have been made.
Sharing a picture of a news reporter on TV outside of the broadcaster’s office, they wrote: ‘BBC host asks BBC reporter standing outside the BBC about allegations against unnamed BBC star.
‘BBC reporter says they “haven’t been able to confirm” whether the BBC presenter has been suspended by the BBC.’
TalkTV broadcaster Morgan quote-tweeted the original post, simply writing in response: ‘Ridiculous.’
‘The Met has received initial contact from the BBC in relation to this matter, but no formal referral or allegation has been made,’ a spokesperson for the police force said.
‘We will require additional information before determining what further action should follow.’
In his own statement, BBC director-general Tim Davie said that he is ‘wholly condemning the unsubstantiated rumours being made on the internet about some of our presenting talent’, after several BBC stars spoke out to state publicly that they were not the unidentified presenter.
In a note sent to staff and seen by PA, Davie said that the corporation takes ‘all such allegations incredibly seriously’.
