Pokemon: 10 Best Non-Legendary Bug Types In The Series, Ranked

0

Bug-type Pokémon are often considered to be the worst Pokémon typing, since, in terms of appearance, they’re feeble, creepy, and disliked by many fans. Much like their real-life counterparts, they don’t just appear bizarre but also lack many useful abilities during combat.

Other than some mythical Pokémon, there are no Bug-type Legendaries that exist in the series but despite their vulnerabilities to many lethal moves and their low use in competitive play, Bug types can surprise you sometimes, especially when pitted against Psychic or Grass-types. Some exceptional Bug types like Ninjask or Scizor stand out and can have a decent competitive advantage in battle if used correctly, and these usually end up in tournaments as either great supports or fast attackers.

10 Ninjask

Ninjask in the Pokemon Anime

Considered to be one of the fastest non-legendary Pokémon, Ninjask defies expectations with its lacklustre stats, yet its 160 Speed stat isn’t something that you’ll want to neglect. Ninjask isn’t just a speed gun; it’s also a decent Physical Attacker and moves like X-Scissor can leave a mark on your opponent.

However, the real gem with Ninjask is its Baton Pass ability, which allows it to pass its speed stat and moves like Swords Dance onto another Pokémon. Ninjask’s special moves and lightning-fast speed makes it a must-have to add to a Bug-themed team.

9 Buzzwole

Buzzwole Ultrabeast Pokemon, in the Anime

One of the Ultra Beast Pokémon, Buzzwole has incredible strength thanks to its rare Fighting and Bug-type combination. Its special ability, Beast Boost, further enhances its dominant presence by increasing its highest stat after every knockout against opposing Pokémon.

The only place that Buzzwole lacks in is the Special stats, and its vulnerability against Fairy and Psychic-type attacks doesn’t do it any favors; however, with a high physical attack and defense, Buzzwole is undoubtedly one of the better Non-Legendary Pokémon and is severely underrated.

8 Araquanid

Araquanid from Pokemon Sword and Shield

Araquanid may seem like an average Pokémon, but it possesses a solid defense and excels with its attacking ability as well. With an add-on of 132 Special Defense, it can withstand incoming attacks with ease.

Where Araquanid truly shines is with its ability, Water Bubble, which not only doubles the power of this Pokémon’s Water-type moves but at the same time serves a defensive purpose by halving the damage taken by Fire-type attacks. The only reason Araquanid is ranked this low is due to this Pokémon’s disappointing speed, which is a severe handicap in battle.

7 Galvantula

Galvantula from the Pokemon Anime

The Glass Canon, Galvantula, is known for its combination of highly effective attacks, and weak line of defense as it’s vulnerable to Rock and Fire attacks. Other than that though, Galvantula can pretty much fit in any team as it possesses a remarkable Speed stat, and its high Special Attack can open it up to an attacker position in your lineup.

Galvantula’s signature ability, Compound Eyes, enhances its accuracy, ensuring that all its attacks hit their mark. This ability, combined with its move pool featuring lethal moves like Thunder & Bug Buzz, makes it quite popular among fans.

6 Scoliopede

Scoliopede from the anime

Scoliopede is a centipede-like Pokémon that’s renowned for its highly aggressive nature. According to its Pokedex entry, if it’s engaged in a fight, Scoliopede will not give up until it has destroyed its opponent. During a competitive battle, it shines because of its remarkable Speed, which can easily outpace other Pokémon.

Scoliopede’s moveset includes a variety of powerful Bug and Poison-type attacks, such as Megahorn and Poison Jab. These moves synergize perfectly with its special ability, Speed Boost, which gradually increases its Speed throughout a battle, ensuring Scoliopede remains a force to be reckoned with.

5 Golisopod

Golisopod from the Pokemon anime

A huge arthropod like Pokémon, Golisopod has a weird appearance with a hunched posture, making him look even more imposing than he is. Golisopod is a lethal attacker, capable of delivering powerful blows to opponents while also having a solid defense and good resistances.

Its ability, Emergency Exit, triggers just as its HP falls below the half level, allowing it to switch out of battle. The Emergency Exit ensures Golisopod’s survival so that it can later come out to strike back relentlessly. Despite having such defensively solid capabilities and impressive Attack stats, Golisopod loses its versatility with its poor speed, but since it’s relatively tanky, it’s usually not a problem.

4 Pinsir

Pinsir from the Pokemon anime

Pinsir is a Generation One classic and a fan favorite. It’s one of the better Bug types to have come out of the series. Other than that, having a move like Swords Dance boosts its Attack stats makes Pinsir an excellent sweeper.

Generation One bias allowed it to it also receive a Mega Evolution, which changes it from just a Bug to a Bug and Flying type. As you would expect, the Mega Evolution makes it lightning-fast while giving it an out-of-this-world Attack stat of 155, allowing it to knock out any Pokémon that comes its way.

3 Heracross

Heracross from the Pokemon anime

Heracross is another Bug and Fighting-type Pokémon, famous for its comparison with Pinsir. Both Heracross and Pinsir share similar moves; however, Heracross’s aggressive nature and moveset lend it an upper hand in battles. It also has a Mega Evolution like Pinsir, which greatly boosts its attack.

Plus, its signature abilities, Guts, and Moxie allow Heracross to significantly increase its stats. Its moveset also includes attacks like Megahorn and Earthquake, allowing it to deal heavy damage to opponent Pokémon. Heracross can easily wreck an under-prepared team with such impressive stats and abilities making it one of the best Bug-types ever.

2 Volcarona

Volcarona from the Pokemon Anime

Volcarona has a fantastic design with a Moth-like appearance and fiery wings. It was initially considered a Legendary since you only got to catch it during a special event. After the confusion died, people realized that it might as well be legendary since it excels at being a setup Pokémon. Its high stats in Special Attack and Speed make it unforgettable during a fight.

Quiver Dance can boost its Speed, Special Defense, and Special Attack stats making it practically unstoppable. While using its Flame Body ability, it burns opponents when they try to get close. This move and the ability add a layer of utility to Volcarona’s repertoire, making it stand out as one of the deadliest sweepers and an absolute menace in combat.

1 Scizor

The Iconic Scizor from the Pokemon Anime

Scizor is a fan-favorite when it comes to the Bug-type Pokémon since its evolution comes from the classic Scyther, which used to be one of the most impressive non-legendary Pokémon in Competitive play. With a base Attack stat of 130, Scizor has excellent strength. Its moveset features deadly abilities like Swarm, which triggers when its HP is low, allowing the damage done by its Bug-type moves to increase by 50%.

With moves like Fury Cutter and Iron Head, Scizor can swiftly strike first and exploit the weaknesses of its opponents. Scizor’s Mega Evolution further enhances its stats, especially in Defense, making Scizor a more resilient battler. Its competitive viability and versatility are endless, making it the strongest Bug-type out of the series so far.
