What began as a police call-out over a lovers’ spat ended in the rape of a 20-year-old. Now those two police officers accused of her rape have had their bail extended over a delay in DNA tests.

RAPE ACCUSED POLICE CONTINUE TO ROAM THE STREETS

Two police officers will continue to roam the North West on bail after a delay in their court case over DNA. Their bail was extended on Friday to 22 June in Molopo Magistrate’s Court for further investigation and DNA test results.

Spokesperson for the North West National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Henry Mamothame says the police officers, aged 26 and 36, are out on R3 000 bail each.

Mamothame says the police officers’ bail conditions prohibited them from making contact with their alleged victim or interfering with state witnesses.

“They are also prohibited from going to taverns or similar establishments and were further prohibited from leaving the Mahikeng district without reporting to the investigating officer,”

said Mamothame.

HANDCUFFED, DRUGGED AND RAPED

According to a preliminary report compiled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), a 20-year-old woman alleged she was at her boyfriend’s home in Lorwaneng village on 30 March when an argument broke out between the two. Following the commotion, police were called out to address the situation.

The 20-year-old was subsequently detained by the responding officers for malicious property damage, as she had broken windows.

While she was being driven to the police station in handcuffs she alleged the car stopped in Mahikeng. She alleged she was forced to swallow a drink that made her woozy.

The woman alleged both officers then raped her while she remained handcuffed.

They allegedly took her home after the ordeal. Her family then decided to take the 20-year-old to the hospital for medical attention.
