Princess Kate commits similar fashion blunder to Meghan Markle at Wimbledon

Kate has not been the first royal to make this critical fashion mistake, as Princess Diana famously stepped out in a creased bridal dress on her wedding day in 1981, after travelling in a horse-drawn carriage from Clarence House.

Elizabeth Emanuel, one of the designers who made Diana’s iconic wedding dress, admitted she “felt faint” after seeing Diana at St Paul’s Cathedral before she was to walk down the aisle.

In an interview with ITV in 2018, Elizabeth said: “We did know it would crease a bit but when I saw her arrive at St Paul’s and we saw the creasing I actually felt faint.

“I was horrified, really, because it was quite a lot of creasing. It was a lot more than we thought.”

Meghan Markle is another member of the Royal Family who sometimes appeared at royal engagements with wrinkled clothes.

In January 2019 Meghan visited Smartworks, a charity that provides interview clothes and training to women in need, and it was noticed that the Duchess’ Oscar de la Renta coat was creased when she stepped out of her car.

After the incident, fashion expert Mulberry Scott Henshall said that the clothing fabric was to blame. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Henshall explained that Meghan’s stylists should “familiarise themselves with the best wrinkle-free fabrics, and keep these in mind next time.”

On social media, royal fans have also said that Kate’s Wimbledon fashion mistake was simply due to the fabric, plus that sitting was a long time and the warmer weather would make it more likely for clothes to become crumpled.

One user wrote: “The dress would’ve been better for a standing-type event. Love the colour on [Kate] though” while another person commented: “The fabric is, unfortunately, the wrong choice. A shame as it’s lovely.”

One fan added: “Silk wool absolutely wrinkles. It’s a beautiful design and is tailored to fit [Kate] very nicely – but summer weather and silk wool ensure wrinkles – poor choice for outdoors.”
