It sees movie buffs and talented creatives combine, and Revelation Perth International Film Festival has continued to grow since its inception in 1997 by Richard Sowada.

The 2023 instalment will see 200 international and Australian films presented at cinemas across Perth. Ahead of opening night, we spoke with Alexander Circosta — who has been working behind the scenes filming interviews and developing digital content to help promote the event.

REV kicks off tonight, tell us about it?

REV screens a curated selection of films by local, national and international independent filmmakers, with a focus on experimental and documentary-style.

The festival starts with a screening of Perth-based director Ben Young’s feature film Devil’s Peak, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Robin Wright and Hopper Penn.

Sound and post-production for the film was completed here in WA — a first for our State for an international film of this scale.

Cinephiles can also participate in Q&As, panels and workshops with special guests throughout the event.

How did you become involved?

I met Revelation general manager Suzanne Worner — at the movies of course — and was enchanted by her passion for cinema and the importance of mentorship and support for up-and-coming creatives.

As a creative myself, I share her passion for film and local talent, so I grabbed my camera and mic and have been attending Revelation events ever since.

I love the arts, and want to showcase and celebrate it — especially all wonderful, creative people who do wonderfully, creative things in WA.

Have you spoken with any filmmakers?

I spoke with the City of Vincent Film Project winners who received funding to turn their ideas into short films. Hearing how these emerging makers felt “held and supported” is what organisations and events like this are all about.

Why is it important for Perth to host these sorts of events?

We are developing into an international destination — a thriving creative sector is vital.

What could the creative arts scene in Perth do with more of?

A long-term plan for the development of venues and accessible platforms, where emerging creatives can collaborate with experienced artists, showcase work and learn about the business side of the industry.
