Ramadan 2023 India moon sighting LIVE: Muslims in Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Hyderabad and other cities to sight crescent

ByZarafshan Shiraz, Delhi

The Ramadan fasting date changes yearly because Muslims follow the Islamic calendar that is based on the lunar cycle or phases of the moon hence, Ramzan starting and end date depends upon the sighting of the crescent moon. Usually, the crescent of Ramadan is first sighted in Saudi Arabia and some parts of India along with some Western countries and then usually a day later in the rest of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries.

The crescent moon of Ramadan 2023 was not sighted in Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK and Australia on March 22 hence, these countries along with some other Muslim-majority nations are gearing up to mark the first fast of Ramadan 2023 tomorrow, March 23 while taraweeh there will begin after sunset on March 22. If the crescent moon is sighted in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries tonight, there are rare chances that Ramadan, also known as Ramazan or Ramzan or Ramzaan, may begin for everyone across the world from March 23, Ramadan 1444 AH.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia will most likely sight the Ramadan moon on March 22 hence, the first fasting day of Ramadan for them will be March 23. If the Ramadan crescent is not sighted after sunset on March 22 that is the 29th day of Sha’ban 1444 Hijri, the first fast will be observed on March 24 while taraweeh in these countries will begin from March 23 evening.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam during which they abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, evil thoughts and action and having marital relations from dawn until sunset. It is a time for self-reflection and spiritual growth where Muslims also spend more time in prayer and reading the Quran during this month and many mosques offer additional services during Ramadan, including Taraweeh prayers, which are special nightly prayers that are longer than the usual daily prayers.
