India are taking Australia in the final and the left-arm spinner has broken a four-decade-long record and sits at the pinnacle of it.
Jadeja was picked up as the sole spinner for India in the WTC Final. The no. 1 ranked Test all-rounder was chosen ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin. Although Ashwin has been missed, Jadeja has done no harm to his reputation.
The Indian spinner made a fantastic return from injury in the Border Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, where he picked up 22 wickets in the four-match Test series. Jadeja had a stellar IPL 2023 with Chennai Super Kings and has continued his rich form in the WTC Final as well.
Jadeja scored 48 important runs in the batting for India, adding to his one wicket during bowling. And in Australia’s second innings, the 34-year-old picked up the wickets of Steve Smith and Travis Head, two first inning centurions of Australia.
Ravindra Jadeja breaks Bishan Singh Bedi’s Record
Smith was caught by Shardul Thakur and Jadeja sent back Head after completing a catch on his own bowling. And with the wicket of Head, Jadeja broke a 44-year-old record which was in the name of former India spinner Bishan Singh Bedi.
Jadeja broke Bedi’s 266 Test wickets to become the highest wicket-taker for India in Tests when it comes to a left-arm spinner. Jadeja now stands at 267 Test wickets in 65 matches in the longest format of the game.
He also equalled Ravichandran Ashwin’s record of dismissing Steve Smith, as now both Ashwin and Jadeja have picked up Smith eight times in Test cricket. The Australian batter has been dismissed most by England pacer Stuart Broad (9 times).
