Remove black mould from walls ‘in minutes’ with 95p bathroom staple

Black mould in bathrooms can be caused by steam that’s unable to escape condensing and cooler surfaces like painted bathroom walls. The mould can then grow on tile grout, bath sealant, window ledges and walls. If left to fester, mould spores can cause health problems such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and even a skin rash.

With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe shared their go-to solution for removing mould from walls.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

On one such group, Facebook user Caroline Waister asked: “Heeellllpppp! What’s the best way to get rid of black mould in bathrooms and to help stop it from coming back?

“This comes back every winter, we’ve had people in to check the roof, guttering, soffit and rendering and can’t see anything wrong to be causing leaks or damp.

“We decorated the whole bathroom two years ago and now it is ruined by this!”

Shaz Holdsworth suggested: “Definitely Astonish Mould and Mildew. It’s 95p in Wilkos.

“I had the same problem at the weekend. Bought the spray and two tins of paint. Ended up taking the paint back as it just disappeared with no stains when I sprayed the Astonish on it.”

Lizzy Dripping said: “Spray with Astonish Mould and Mildew remover, dab on with a sponge.

“Might take a few nights, ensure the room is well-ventilated, then treat as soon as it restarts.

“Then daily the bathroom needs plenty of ventilation after use e.g. window left open, use a dehumidifier.

“Next time you repaint it, use a professional anti-fungal emulsion and possibly a damp seal prior to painting.”

Astonish Mould and Mildew spray can be bought online or from most local supermarkets.

Astonish Mould & Mildew Blaster is available from Wilko for 95p, in Asda for 99p and Astonish Mould & Mildew Trigger Spray can be bought from Ocado for £1.20.

The product claims to be “the UK’s number one mould and mildew remover”.

The description for the product said: “Our Mould & Mildew blasts away tough stains and effectively removes mould and mildew stains in minutes.”

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included increasing the ventilation in the bathroom, using Dettol Mould and Mildew spray, white vinegar, HG Mould Spray and bleach.

Jackie Hibbert said: “Ventilation, I leave my bathroom window on vent year round. Never had it since.”

Gem Richards replied: “It needs to be ventilated. When you’ve had baths and showers you need something on. Or window open.”

Sandra Newman commented: “Ventilation; keep trickle vent open on the window and leave open or on night vent whenever possible.

“When you run a bath run the cold water first you’ll get less steam, try and keep your showers as short as possible.

“Do you have an extractor fan, if not get one fitted? Cillit Bang Mould remover is good but without ventilation, it will keep coming back.”

Sharon Wilmot suggested: “Leave the window open, our bathroom window is ajar 24/7. Also, do you have an extractor fan?”

Maria Lee said: “Spray white vinegar on, leave for 20 minutes then wash with warm water and liquid.”

Sarah Jane Wicks replied: “HG Mould spray is the best product I’ve used. Amazon is where I got mine.”

Emma Byrnes wrote: “Bleach, I had this problem for a long time and used bleach, dabbed it on the walls with a sponge and then wiped off after a couple of minutes, it never came back after that.”
