REVEALED: WA’s best steak sanga (and it’s in a food truck)

The best steak sandwich in WA comes from a pub that is no longer standing.

But in a win for hungry punters south of the river, the CY O’Connor Village Pub has found a way to bring back its newly crowned winner as part of a food-truck menu on offer in its beer garden.

The food truck at the reopened beer garden released its new menu this month, including the pub’s renowned “steak sanga” that won the Australian Hotels Association WA WA’s best steak sandwich competition on November 8.

Served on a toasted herb panini, the sandwich has crispy onions, field mushrooms, rocket, marinated tomatoes, barbecue sauce and truffle aioli and the Melaleuka Farm steak.

Before the food truck started at the beer garden, punters had to go to The Byford Tavern to get a taste of CY O’Connor head chef Mat Still’s masterpiece.

Tillbrook Melaleuka Group managing director John Dawkins, who runs CY O’Connor Village Pub, told PerthNow it was a genuine farm-to-plate offering.

“The main unique thing about it is that we farm our beef,” he said.

“We farm our own cattle in North Dandalup — they are a unique breed called Akaushi which is a Japanese breed of cattle which has healthier fat and better flavour than standard beef.

“We worked together with our suppliers to get really good ingredients for the whole thing.”

The Piara Waters institution was bit with a $5 million damage bill after a fire tore through the pub in June.

Since then, its owners opened a burger bar called Paperbark Burger Co as well as the beer garden next door, while work has continued on the rebuilding of the main venue.

“The reality is construction will start next year and our hope is to be open before the end of next year,” Mr Dawkins said.

“Externally, we’d like it to be very similar to what it was before … Integrally, we are going to take the opportunity to do a lot of improvements.

“We put our strategy into getting back open on site with the beer garden, burger bar and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will get the bottle shop up and running again.”

Other local AHAWA award winners include Tonic Ginger at The Old Synagogue which won the restaurant award and The Gate Bar and Bistro’s Lisa Lemon who won the rising star award.
