There have been many tales across cultures which talk about people who are possessed by spirits and demons. There are mentions of people who sense and see these spirits. Such incidents and stories spawned a new branch of fear and superstition amongst people. As time went by and myths started getting debunked, people started to believe less and less in spirits and ghosts. But even today, there is a branch of people who believe ghosts exist and another branch of people who promise a riddance from those ghosts. How much of the tales are true, one can never gauge. But that does not stop one’s imagination. Ideas which are fueled by interest in the cryptic and the unknown often pave the way to stories of horror beyond one’s imagination. The latest adaptation of horror tales into stories is ‘Revenant’ starring Kim Tae Ri and Oh Jung Se in the lead. The drama premiered on June 23, 2023 making it a good addition to the weekend binge list!

Revenant Review: Kim Tae Ri and Oh Jung Sae join hands to chase away evil and seek truth in this moody, occult supernatural thriller

Kim Tae Ri plays the role of Sun Young, a young girl in her 20s who is working hard to make her ends meet. She works part-time while also studying for law. She lives with her mother, who is unable to land a decent job because of her clumsy nature at work. Sun Young is hard-working and intelligent and she does not believe in ghosts or the horror tales either. But one day when she touches a cursed object, her life changes and for the worse.

The latest horror thriller K-drama Revenant portrays a character who is looking for answers – Yeom Haesang (played by Oh Jung Se), a professor of folklore literature who has been tirelessly looking for answers of ominous happenings. He can see spirits and often goes to help people who are cursed by these spirits. Amongst his peers and the people in general, he is dubbed as someone who is creepy and weird because of his way of living and his approach to finding spirits.

Hae Sang and Sun Young cross paths after Hae Sang finds that she is possessed by the same evil spirit that killed his mother. He sets on a mission to find the nature and origin of that evil spirit. Sun Young does not believe him at first but the first hand evidence makes her believe in Hae Sang’s tales. The two set off on a path to fight off these evil spirits and help the people. Sun Young’s deceased father is also connected to the evil spirit latched onto Sun Young. It remains to be seen how the story pans out.

Each episode of Revenant is just over an hour long. The drama runs on two lines – the first being Sun Young’s story as she figures out the evil spirit latched onto her and the second being Sun Young and Hae Sang coming across other people who are cursed by spirits. The major arc about Sun Young unfolds in bits and pieces while the secondary arc is complete with each episode. The scenes are adequately longer in duration, and take their sweet time to tell the story. The flashbacks add a good padding to the backstories of each character, thus lending a multi-layer depth to the story. Despite being a horror show, thankfully not all panels run in dark mode. The color scheme ranges largely from a pastel to a fade, with occasional bursts of colors, especially when there are flashbacks.

It is moody, occult supernatural thriller which has had a slow start from writer Kim Eun Hee seems to be interested in building the narrative with hopes to tie all the pieces together by the end of the series. Kim Tae Ri and Oh Jung Se are promising in their performances. The actress turn towards the horror genre in K-drama is a great addition to her filmography. It only goes to show the versatility of her skills. Oh Jung Se as the folklore professor is again very captivating to watch. He holds an air of mystery around him and the dubious nature of his works makes one not fully believe the professor. Oh Jung Se’s wide range of character portrayals so far is testament to his great acting and honest story-telling. Revenant’s story holds promise with a water-tight narration and good deal of jump scares for the fans of the genre.
