Rolling method is a ‘common packing mistake’ that creases clothes

Packing for a holiday with a hand luggage only bag can be a bit of a nightmare for British tourists.

Express.co.uk spoke to Alison Johnson, owner of Moving To Spain and travel expert, to get her top packing tips.

The rolling method is often recommended by flight attendants and involves tourists rolling their clothes up to fit more in the suitcase.

However, according to Alison, rolling clothes is actually a “packing mistake” and could leave Britons with a creased holiday wardrobe.

She told Express.co.uk: “A common mistake when trying to pack can be rolling your clothes instead of folding them.

“Not only can this be counteractive in the long run, creasing your clothes so they aren’t ready to wear straight away, but it also takes up just as much space as it would if you were to fold them neatly.

“Alternatively, fold your clothes into a packing cube, this way you can organise your items whilst also being able to keep them packed as tightly and compactly as possible.”

Packing cubes are an inexpensive way of organising a suitcase and can even be unpacked into drawers as they are.

Alison added: “‌When loading your cabin luggage it is not always guaranteed that you will be able to store it above your seat.

“To help locate it once the flight has landed, add something identifiable to your case or bag.

“This could be a ribbon or a sticker which can help if your suitcase is bare or a common colour. You should also pack your bags so that anything you might need on your flight such as books, headphones etc are easily accessible in your under-seat baggage.

“I would also recommend having any technology and liquids towards the top of your baggage ready for passing through security.”

Although London City Airport no longer requires passengers to remove liquids from their bags, this is still common practice at most UK and European airports.

Tourists will need to scan any laptops or other electronic devices separately so it makes sense to pack these at the top of the bag.
