Rutgers vs. Indiana prediction and odds for Tuesday, February 7 (Can Indiana avoid letdown?)

Indiana scored one of the most impressive wins of the season on Saturday, knocking off-instate rival and No. 1 ranked Purdue at home.

Now, the Hoosiers must keep up their fine play against Rutgers, who shutdown Indiana earlier this season in New Jersey, 63-48. IU is playing their best ball of the season, though, and will look to feed off the Assembly Hall crowd en route to a another quality win.

This is a brutal matchup for Indiana, who is coming off their biggest win of the year against Purdue, only to face the best defense in the Big Ten and arguably the best in the country. The Scarlett Knights are the best team at generating turnovers while also funneling teams inside the three-point line into contested two-point shots. Rutgers has the 14th best field goal percentage at the rim this season, per Haslametrics, while also allowing the 46th lowest three-point rate in the country. There’s simply nowhere to go for opposing offenses.

This matchup doesn’t suit Indiana well at all, the team is 10th in turnover rate in Big Ten play and has been buoyed by incredible three-point shooting, a Big Ten best 39% in league games. Against Rutgers stifling defense, I’m not counting on a strong offensive game like the team got against Purdue.

On the other side, the Hoosiers have some concerning metrics lingering, including their inability to turn opponents over (12th in Big Ten games) and their high foul rate (13th). Rutgers isn’t a standout offense, but they generate second chances at a high clip against a weak rebounding group like IU.

At over a few possessions in a game that should be played in the 60’s, I’ll side with the road underdog.
