Sainsbury’s slashes price of 300 staples in Nectar card change

Britons who shop at Sainsbury’s will benefit from instant discounts at the checkout when buying certain products. Current deals that apply to 300 products will be extended to all Nectar cardholders in a bid to make the retailer more affordable. And included in the discounts are everyday staples like Heinz Baked Beans.

Customers with a Nectar card will be able to make savings on Sainsbury’s range of 300 discounted items in the latest change to the loyalty scheme.

The deals only currently apply to cardholders who use the self-scan checkouts in store, though this will soon be scrapped.

Instead, all Nectar points collectors will benefit from instant discounts when paying for their shopping.

By simply scanning the loyalty card the checkout, customers will see the price of selected items reduced by one third.

The update to the scheme makes it more similar to the Tesco Clubcard which allows shoppers to save on a range of food and household essentials.

Those with a Clubcard can access the savings by tapping their barcode at the checkout, and claims to save people up to £351 per year, based on the top 25 percent of users.

Now used in the same way as the popular blue savings card, Sainsbury’s Nectar customers will see the price of many family favourites reduced from pounds to pennies.

And according to supermarket CEO, Simon Roberts, the new range is “just the beginning”, with more discounts to come.

Among the discounted products are Heinz Baked Beans which usually cost £1.40.

But for those with a Nectar Card, the price will be reduced to just 95p.

The Sun reported that an £8.10 jar of Nescafe gold Blend coffee (200g) will cost just £4 at the checkout – cutting the price by more than half.

Household essentials are also part of the reduced range, including Ariel All-in-1 washing pods which are reduced from £10.50 to just £5.

The update to the Nectar scheme was done to encourage more Britons to shop at the supermarket despite rising prices.

CEO Simon Roberts noted that the supermarket had been on a mission to slash the price of fresh produce to compete with budget retailers like Aldi.

And while many shops had struggled to avoid price hikes, Sainsbury’s prides itself on the slow inflation of their own prices, which the CEO credited to a £550million investment.

In addition to making savings, Nectar cardholders can also collect points with every purchase. According to the Nectar website, 500 points are worth £2.50 at Sainsbury’s, and shoppers can spend the points both online and in-store.
