According to new research from Verdant Leisure, two in five Britons planning a staycation this year want to travel to Scotland.

While the country’s most famous attractions include Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness and Ben Nevis, there are a few hidden gems that shouldn’t be missed.

From a spectacular castle with a “haunted past” to a serene forest park, Scotland has so much to discover.

Francesca Houldsworth, one of Verdant Leisure’s travel experts, has shared several of the country’s best hidden gems.

Scotland even has an incredibly beautiful beach which could be mistaken for a Caribbean island paradise.

Culzean Castle was the country’s best hidden gem, according to Francesca who described it as a “must-see for architecture fanatics and historians alike”.

She added: “Built in the 16th century, this property has a haunted past and is rumoured to be home to several paranormal residents. The castle is perched on the top of a cliff so not only boasts spectacular architecture, but stunning views and gardens.”

A hiker’s paradise and one of Scotland’s most accessible islands, it costs just £5 to take a ferry to the beautiful Isle of Arran which was second on the list.

Britons will need to head to the Highlands of Perthshire to explore Tay Forest Park, but it’s worth it for idyllic woodland trails and breathtaking mountain views.

Cove Harbour at the Scottish Borders is only accessible through a tunnel on foot. Francesca said: “Beach bums will be more than content when venturing to the quaint fishing village of Cove Harbour.”

Calder Mill Waterfall rounded off the top five and is one of Scotland’s most spectacular waterfalls.

Pease Bay is the ideal holiday destination for Britons who want to combine a city break with a relaxed beach day.
