SCOTS have been left fuming after an influx of visitors “destroyed” a popular beauty spot that’s just 15 miles outside Glasgow.

Locals have been left outraged after the spectacular Devil’s Pulpit, just south of the village of Drymen, Stirlingshire, has been left “wrecked” by visitors.

Known for its sandstone bedrock which appears to run blood red due to the sediment in the water, the gorge has been a popular set for television and film.

Hits such as Sherlock Holmes, Taggart, Pokemon Detective Pikachu and King Arthur have all used the stunning location.

The natural phenomenon attracts thousands of visitors each year who walk the 1.5 mile route down the steps to swim in the pool at the bottom.

It is around one and a half miles from the southern border of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and situated near Killearn on land owned by a local farmer David Young.

In 2020, Mr Young sought planning permission from Stirling Council to formalise the attraction, converting the area using a series of paths and a viewing platform leading to the Pulpit.

And now, locals have been left furious after the influx of traffic has “wrecked” the path and visitors left “rubbish” along the way.

One local shared a photo in the Scotland from the Roadside Facebook group hitting out at the situation.

The picture showed a large crowd trying to get down the steep staircase while others were trying to get up – with no safety rail or rope and large sharp rocks along the path.

The post read: “Stairway to Devils Pulpit today. It’s getting So dangerous, please don’t try this with little ones or dogs. A serious accident waiting to happen.

“And it was mobbed today too. We came away… To unsafe for us. The stairs were loose under foot wobbling.

“As you got further down stairs were missing and no safety rope there today – notlLike we had seen when looking into going.

“Family had been before but it wasn’t like this. Gutted…. But not worth the risk for me my husband or teenage daughter.

“We turned back and went for a walk instead. This is just to let people see what it was like today.”

Users flocked to the comments to praise the poster for highlighting the issue.

One person said: “To be fair this is the stuff they should be posting about this place. Absolutely wrecked by the amount of traffic there, not to mention the rubbish and actual s***!

“Another beautiful place destroyed by people who only see the nice posts, and don’t consider their impact. Also the mountain rescue are forever here.”

Another added: “It does look over run like many beauty spots are sadly now. People can enjoy nature but when they are trashing it and using it as a toilet is that enjoying it or further destruction of our beautiful countryside?”

Someone else wrote: “Like a lot of natural beauty spots in Scotland they are being ruined by too many people going, littering and not having respect for the beautiful natural spaces we’re lucky to have access to.”
