Skip Bayless, Shannon Sharpe unload on John Calipari for underperforming at Kentucky

John Calipari still has just one title with Kentucky basketball, something Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe blasted the head coach for on FS1.

Whenever Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe get someone in sports in their crosshairs, they don’t hold back. Sometimes, it’s a bit over-the-top, but they are relentless, particularly when it comes to criticism of performance. So when Kentucky basketball head coach John Calipari came up, such was the case.

During a segment on FS1’s Undisputed, the boisterous duo unloaded on Calipari for what amounts to underperformance in Lexington.

“Kentucky ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Sharpe said. “You all gotta do better. They should have had at least three (titles),” he later added.

Bayless responded by saying that he didn’t disagree with the assessment, shaking his head in performative disappointment.

Make no mistake, there is some merit to what Skip and Shannon are saying here. Kentucky basketball measures success in championships and, despite being a factory for NBA talent and a plethora of top draft picks, the Wildcats have just one title.

At the same time, though, that does diminish the objective success that Calipari has had in Lexington.

Since he arrived in 2009, Calipari has just the one championship but has been to two title games and four total Final Fours. He’s also been to the Elite Eight an additional three times. So for those keeping track at home, in the 14 seasons that Coach Cal has been at Kentucky, he’s made the Elite Eight and half of those seasons.

Most programs would take that. But the expectations for the Wildcats have always been higher than most. And after failing to make the Sweet 16 in the last three tournaments, it’s no wonder that Skip and Shannon are having this type of conversation.
