Sofia Vergara felt “stifled” in her marriage to Joe Manganiello, according to friends of the actress.
The 51-year-old Modern Family star and the 49-year-old Magic Mike star issued a statement on July 17 saying they were getting divorced after seven years of marriage.
Now, friends of the Colombian actress reportedly claim Joe was “unsupportive” and “threatened by her success.”
“Sofia’s living her best life. She’s spending time with her friends after being stifled in a relationship with a largely unsupportive partner,” a source told Page Six.
“Sofía was always there to take care of Joe, while his career was never what it was when they met. I think he’s been threatened by her success and joie de vivre.”
Express.co.uk has contacted representatives for Sofia and Joe for comment.
Sofia is back in LA having celebrated her 51st birthday in one of Italy’s hotspots earlier this month.
The holiday came just before the divorce announcement, and she was not accompanied by Joe.
At the time, Joe shared a birthday tribute to his wife consisting of a low-resolution snap of the couple with the simple caption “¡¡¡Feliz Cumpleaños Sofía!!!” (sic)
Fans were quick to comment on how impersonal it was, with one writing: “Oh no. There’s trouble in paradise. I can sense it.”
Another labelled the caption as “cold” and wrote: “Joe, I hope you guys are OK, that was a very different(cold) happy birthday wish to your wife, compare to previous ones!”
Just a week after her celebrations, the couple issued their joint statement, which read: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce.
“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”
Joe has hired celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser and was the first to file divorce papers, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.
The marriage was Joe’s first and Sofia’s second. She was previously married to her high school sweetheart Joe Gonzalez from 1991 to 1993. That union produced her only child Manolo, who is now 31 years old.
